I don't know how true this is, but I'm going to try it. Your Real Age recommends using a shampoo only twice a week as apposed to every day. They recommend just using water on the non shampoo days.

I've heard it before.

My sister works at a salon and tells me that not to shampoo my hair so often (sometimes multiple times a day). I just can't stand the idea of walking around after a workout having not shampooed my hair.

Can a daily conditioner help revitalize the nutrients that prevent thinning hair?

Conditioners should be used sparingly (also try not to let it on the scalp), especially if you have a weak head of hair to begin with.

Seriously, where do you get this stuff? Better to contribute nothing than useless old wive's tales.

Nobody mentioned "dermatologist." Go to one. Propecia won't work as expected if the cause isn't male pattern baldness.

I'm surprised this thread is being talked about. Anyway, I'll take all advice into consideration. Thanks for the replies!

Propecia/finasteride is a serious anti-androgen, so proceed with caution. It can and will destroy your sperm count and ***** volume, reduce muscle tone, and (in very rare cases) shrink your nuts. These side effects are very severely underreported and/or buried by Merck's marketing efforts.

You have to decide if you prefer your reproductive health or your hairline. An annoying and not particularly fun choice to have to make. On one hand, you may want to have babies someday. On the other hand, losing your hair is going to hurt your chances of finding a baby-making partner in the first place.

I echo the last comment.

I have seen great effects, however, with propecia, bimatoprost and minoxidil in a close friend of mine.

It is, however, an expensive upkeep!

Take Saw Palmetto, Stinging Nettle, Pygeum, Beta Sitosterol capsules if you don't want to go the Propecia route.

Use Nizoral shampoo every other day. Leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing it off.

If I've made it to 42YO without losing my hair, am I in the clear?

+1

If you do start balding, skip all this pharmaceutical BS and embrace it. No need for a complete shave, but buzz your head to a close crop . It'll be jarring at first, but you'll grow to love it. Lots of women will too.

Usually, but...
1) There could be thinning that only a doctor would notice and, if so, the hair could rapidly deteriorate.
2) Hair throughout the scalp naturally thins around normal retirement years.

I wish you all the best. Do ask the doctor about Finisteride or Propecia and weigh up the pros/cons. How comfortable/safe would it be to use an internal med that effects testosterone? There's a website called baldingblog.com which is very interesting and insightful, you could contact the guy there and send him pics. As for baldness, it's always good to plan ahead and address our fears. "Just shave-it-off" is a horrible catch-all. Sure it's better looking than a wispy do or combover, but few men lose all their hair. Different men have different extents to loss, many stabilize at certain degrees, or dramatically slow down. Perhaps you could keep it neat and consult a doctor/hair specialist for a miniaturization pattern study? If you're bothered by it and want to do something, it's good to plan ahead. Look at all the dapper old time movie stars who settled into various mature hair patterns without shaving it off, keeping it neat but not combed over. David Niven's hairline, for example, or Sir John Mills. They kept it neat and made no big deal out of their hairlines. In fact their cuts made their high temple arches look very elegant and distinguished. Good to have a plan anyway, whether it happens or not. The "mother's side" thing is an old wives tale - hair patterns can be determined by either side, according to the baldingblog guy, who is an experienced medical professional. Please don't go down the snakeoil route, for your health and wallet's sake!

There was an episode of Seinfeld where Elaine was dating a guy who shaved his head. She convinced him to start growing it again and to his horror he realized he was going bald. I kind of feel like that guy (well, minus the horror) since I've been cutting my hair very short for the longest time. I've just felt like growing it longer. I haven't made an appointment yet with my Doctor but I think I should. A few days after taking that first photo I buzzed my hair shorter. It's been a few weeks now and, granted I cut my hair myself and with a less than great clippers, my hair is particularly short on one side, more so than the other. This is something I've noticed for a while so it's not a shock. But it does look and feel like it's getting shorter towards the back of my scalp.

Now my hair has grown since I cut it, and since I did it myself I can explain the choppiness, but this is something that's also noticeable when my hair is longer. I'd feel better about it if it were happening more smoothly.
