I am ordering a pair of black tassel loafers from BlkBrd Shoemaker. I want to wear them with darker classic menswear fits as well as some denim.

I am thinking about customizing them with Horween Hatchgrain. I like the texture and that it will lower the formality a bit.

I would appreciate your thoughts and feedback. Thanks in advance.

My $0.02, tassel loafers in cordovan are already the precise amount of informal that goes perfectly with both classic fits (flannel/tweed suits, slacks and sportjacket, etc) and more casual outfits (denim, chinos, etc). To me the hatchgrain would diminish the simplicity and elegance of the tassel loafer and veer towards overly busy. I also wouldn't worry about black being "too formal" (if that's part of the concern) -- in this context the other features of the shoe keep it squarely in range if the lower formality level you're seeking.

Some examples below from Permanent Style (obviously not all tassel loafers but you get the idea)

Thank you. You nailed it. I was concerned about black being too formal. This is very helpful.
