I agree with this completely. I'm not fat and never have been, so it's hard to put myself in their shoes. But it must really take a psychological toll to be subject to packs of howling monkeys constantly throwing shit at you. (This doesn't literally happen to fat people; it is a manner of speaking.) Probably the most pressing reason they have to lose weight is to make the monkeys stop throwing shit. But pleasing a bunch of shit-throwing monkeys is a horrible way to motivate yourself. And so they end up defending themselves, saying in effect "f**k you, shit-throwing monkeys, I'm fat and I'm proud of it." It's certainly a problematic choice, but I think I can understand it.

You can try to alter your race even if the concept is lost on most people like obese women being sexy...

    I love lost causes...

One of my friends posted this on facebook. Yes it may be in support of a good cause, but does anyone else find this kind of thing tasteless following a death of someone?

yes, its absurd and makes no sense. i am in no way belittling the horrible plight of so many african children starving to death daily. however, the fact it steve jobs was an international figure, loved, revered and respected by people around tthe world. and who changed the face of peoples day to day life. there is no reason why millions shouldnt mourn his passing. and also, lets get real here, there are plenty of activists and organizations crying and garnering suppport for the african children. what a stupid fucking comparison.

I've always believed that this way of promoting causes has to be counterproductive. If you scold me for caring about the death of a very well-known public figure who, by any standard, achieved great things in his lifetime, then I'm not going to be very receptive to the rest of your message. In my more cynical moments, I sometimes think these people are more interested in self-expression and "making a statement" than they are in making tangible contributions to improving the conditions of suffering people.

On a similar note, one of my fb friends scolded people for celebrating the Cardinals' victory over the Phillies, pointing out that there were serious problems in the world that deserved our attention instead. Apparently there is only one legitimate topic of conversation ever, and that is the one Most Important Thing.
