Mmm I've always heard it called degloving.

I've been familiar with it for a while now. Participate in two sports where you are strongly encouraged to take off your rings for that very reason. A lot of climbers have embraced silicone rings that won't rip your skin off.

Sailors seem content to have an excuse to take their rings off...
