I didn't either until I lived in a really hot climate and had to park outside often.
I also learned the trick to cool your car down after it had been out in the hot sun and was filled with hot air. I would roll down a window on the passenger side (or opening the sunroof) and then firmly shut (slam) my driver door a time or two to push all of the hot air of the car out. It made the few minutes before the AC took over bearable.
