I really don’t understand how wifi modems/routers work. I’ve been trying for years but I just can’t grasp.

When your web browser connects to www.styleforum.net , your machine is opening a TCP connection from your local IP address on a high numbered port ( typically > 1023 and must be <= 65535) to the IP address that www.styleforum.net resolves to, and TCP port 443 on that IP address.

Most home internet connections only have 1 real IP address, so people that want to have more than one device using the internet have a problem without taking some action

A router doing NAT or PAT, is basically segmenting your house - there is a local area network (LAN) inside your house, and the internet (or more accurately, a network consisting of your internet connection and a part of your internet service provider's network). The router is straddling these 2 logical networks - the router obtains your real internet IP address on the wide area network (WAN) aka internet side, and has a LAN IP address so your devices can talk to it. All of the hosts on your local area network send all their internet traffic to the router. The router looks at that traffic it receives on the LAN interface, and if it is destined for the internet, the router tweaks the packet's addressing, changing the source IP address and TCP/UDP port, before sending the packet to the internet.

So, the router acts like a re-mailing service for internet bound traffic. This allows you to have multiple devices on your LAN "behind" the router. The router knows everything it has done, so when www.styleforum.net responds to the traffic you initiate, the router knows to which host in your network to send that response.
