Why are they suddenly a thing, and are they supposed to be much better than normal oats

I don't know much about any current hype but they've been used for porridge for a long time. They're actually much nicer, imo, for porridge than rolled oats. They need longer to cook, but the flavor and texture are better.
The only difference is that rolled oats are, well, rolled, and steel-cut oats are whole oats cut in two or three pieces by a "steel blade".

Had steel cut oats this morning. I just like the texture and flavor better than the regular stuff. I don't buy the supposed health benefits, which is the normal hype. I'm sure they're healthier than the usual flavored sweetened microwave bullshit most people eat, but can't be much difference from rolled.

Yeah, I don't know whether they are "healthier" than rolled oats. Maybe the longer cooking induces some reactions that lead to a more "nutritious"/easily digestable/whatever porridge?
Either way, slowly cooked steel-cut oats with some salt, then finished with raisins, some banana, chopped walnuts and a bit of butter is great. And if you feel like you deserve something a bit sweeter, add maple syrup. Yummy.

Hanging out in the brewpub here's something I overheard:

"Way I look at it, a real man is a vegan: don't let no meat in to him... ...until the late night hour haw haw haw."

I should have minded my own business, but of course I didn't I said "that didn't even make sense on its own terms." Guy said "Aww it was just a silmly ain't meant to be take so litchrell."

The whole "what REAL man is..." talk is the part I don't get. Men seem to care much about it, especially if they feel they fall short in some areas. Maybe not literally care or think, but if someone makes a what a real man is statement, you can just tell men get uncomfortable(unless that is something that they really are; like a vegan :foo:.)

I preferred those commercials when they were "Real American Heroes," but then 9/11 happened and the terrorists won.
