I am happy to be part of the 30%. Me and Neo.
You and me are the 30% of the 70% that are perfectly functioning alcoholics.
Certainly in New York.
it's such an easy city to get trashed in. And when you're all silly and it's 2 AM, just walk outside, stick your hand in the air, and there's your ride home.
It really is. When I leave New York one of these days, it is one of the things I will miss the most. One can go out and have drinks totally randomly with no advanced planning and have no worries about how to get home.
Also, there is just a broader drinking culture here. Few places outside of New York and the other big cities have such a culture of after-work drinks and boozy brunches. Heck, just the fact that this city gets started later in the morning and eats later a night contributes greatly.
Oh no. You used the b-word.
That, and literally everything takes place at a bar of some sort and if it doesn't they need to offer alcohol of some sort or nobody will go.
I didn't say I liked it, or that I personally took part in such shenanigans, but it is a big part of New York culture.
Also very true.
and the variety of the bars is huge. Take Tribeca (starting at maybe Broadway and Chambers - so the southern most part of Tribeca) you have dank and dirty bars like The Patriot (gross, really, but $6 pitchers), then a quick walk west and you have hip and modern with delicious food at Locanda Verde, and then you can do upscale cocktails and wine within a block or two at places like Corton or any of the Boulet places.
We get started later? I am at my desk at 7:30 am and some other people here get in at 6:30 am. I think it is just my company, in general, but we start very early.
I cannot believe I divulged not only my drunk recipe but how to facilitate implementing it in a drunken state and now I have to read this shit about great bars I cannot go to!
You people are cruel.
I love all of the different bars here. A take on an old Alfred Sloane quote, "A bar for every purse and purpose."
Even with all of the bars, there are still some areas that are wastelands for good drinking.
like Murray Hill. Or northern UWS (Columbus Circle, however, is deadly)
Knowing me I would probably still have 3-5 that I go to 90% of the time. Once you get to the wrong side of 40 all you want is to be able to hear the person you're talking to and for the staff to treat you like the VIP you fucking well are.
