So you miss a call on your cell phone. You call back (by touching the # on your recent list) and it turns out they obviously 'pocket dialed you. instead of 'sorry about that' the person gets all huffy "no, you got the wrong number; I didn't call you; i don't even know you!"

You know I think telemarketers maybe using in service numbers. I'm not sure this is even possible but I have gotten a number of people calling me and saying they had a missed call from me on their phones and when I check my recents there is no record

Happens all the time. The spammers spoof phone numbers with VOIP, and often use numbers that are assigned to someone else.

They love spoofing numbers that share your area code, since it's more likely you'll think it's someone you know and answer.

Spoofing spammers have pretty much made me never answer my cell phone. If the call isn't someone in my contacts I send it straight to voice mail. Spammers need to be summarily executed.

Wait, so if they by chance call someone you know (i.e. in your contacts) the telemarketer call will show up as you on their phone?! :butbut:

It is called neighbor spoofing.

I get about 1 a day. It always matches the area code and first three digits of my phone number. I guess they think you will see the number and assume it is someone you know like it is still 1995 and everyone has a phone number that actually represents where they currently live.

The numbers are faked and could easily belong to someone else.

So where is / who can develop an app to figure out if numbers are spoofed. I mean I'd pay like $100 $5 dollars for that app!

Send me money via kickstarter. You'll get a special thank you in the app credit.

Same here. I don't pickup my cell either unless it's someone in my contacts. Usually if it's a store or something telling me whatever can be picked up then they'll leave a voicemail and I'll call back.

The new version of android on my pixel 3 has a call screening feature that I have been using.

You hit the button and your phone starts trying to talk to the person and relay you what they say...the marketing callers generally just hang up.

There is a "spam" button that then blocks the number...but I always hesitate to use it on these spoofed numbers. I never get the same spoofed number again, so I am probably just blocking some random person who never actually called me.

I have an app that blocks robocalls and sends them straight to voicemail, but for some reason it can't send the spoofed calls to voicemail. It can only flag them.

IDG cops in films, especially serial killer flicks, sucking at being cops. They never call for backup, make insanely stupid decisions and criminals constantly get the drop on them.

my cell phone area code is from the other side of the country, in a place i lived briefly over fifteen years ago. i never changed the number because i figured it'd be a hassle. but this has turned out to be a blessing--80% of spoofed spam calls are from this area code and i can just ignore them since nobody's legitimately calling me from there anyways. and the rest of the spam calls are from random cities all across america. if someone calls me from the philly area, i can just answer.

Speaking of Philly, cheesesteaks suck ****, they need to melt down that broken ass bell, the Eagles are trash-garbage, and the Delaware river kills children.
