Actually, a Mormon friend once explained to me why he and his lovely wife got married quickly. He told me - in general, good Christians lead lives of service, so a good Christian man and a good Christian woman should automatically put each other first and make a good marriage. After that it's a matter of finding someone appealing to you.

They've made it work, so who am I to dispute?

They've been here since I was in high school....graduated in 2004. They have been slowly upgrading the surronding area, redoing most of the strip centers that Houston is famous for around the Galleria.

I think they've been there since I was in high school and I graduated in 2001. I don't know if they were there in the 90's but I'm almost positive they were there in 2001.

Also, to the OP, Goode Co Taqueria does a pretty good breakfast on the weekends. But it gets stupid crowded so get there as early as your hangovers allow.

They weren't there when I lived around Fountainview and Richmond in '95-97. Probably a Y2K beautification effort.

BTW: if you want soul food, This Is It is worth the drive into town. Late lunch of oxtail at This Is It, then a short drive to the museum district which is good for a few hours (particularly if you like it, the strange and ugly). If there's a show at the outdoor pavilion in Hermann Park then I'd hang around, otherwise hit up Amy's Ice Cream for a taste of bohemian weirdness.

Not true.

Houston has a series of TIRZ(Tax increment reinvestment zones) and Management districts that local groups can essentialyl apply for.

The Galleria falls under the Uptown Management District which decided that they wanted to spruce up the area to make sure that it remains the premier shopping destination in the city, so in the early part of the decade they installed those street signs, redid the Post Oak Blvd. medians, started putting up Christmas Lights on Post Oak, among other aesthetic changes.

It can't be assigned to a single mayor. Downtown, greenspoint, upper kirby, energy corridor are just a few of the other management districts around town.

The OP's preppy sensibilities would make This is it an uncomfortable location for him, as the restaurant is frequented by minorities. He maybe more comfortable at Farragos or Cyclones on West Gray where he won't have to face the blight that is Houston's urban poor(being poor is definitely not SF approved)

Well, it's an answer to why those things are there.

So if not your post, than the 6 above it.

By the way, 15% off on fabrics at Hamtilon right now, and my wife just gave me a gift certificate for our anniversary. Try these shirts. They are excellent.

Second ditto on Nick. He is the best in Houston.

Joystix Arcade downtown seems to be pretty fun, but I haven't had a chance to go yet, been meaning to.

If I'm understanding correctly, you pay a 15-20 dollar cover charge on the first and last Friday of every month, which gets you a magnetic wristband or something, which unlocks all the old school arcade games in the place for you to play until your heart's content.

I enjoyed Mama's Oven for soul food and Hank's Ice Cream when I was there in February.

what the hell do you mean you've not been to Phoenicia? As in you've not been to the deli on Westheimer that's been there since dinosaurs roamed the earth, or you've not been to their new big market?

I don't recall trying Droubi's, but Fahdi's (also on Westheimer) was fantastic the times I've been.
