Things to do in Ghana

I have a trip to Accra, Ghana coming up. Will be there for nearly a week. Have any of the well-travelled SF members been there and can recommend anything?

I have come to the conclusion that custom shirts are the best souvenirs to bring home from pretty much anywhere, so if there is such a thing as custom shirtmaking in Accra, I'd particularly appreciate info on that.

But also anything else, i.e. food, what to see, etc.

Thanks!

Sorry, never been outside of its airport. It should definitely be less chaotic than Nigeria.

So I'm told; I wonder why people tend to compare those two out of all countries in Africa.

Because they're right next to each other (minus the two puny countries between them)? And they're rivals.

That is the smallest of my worries.

So it appears that there is little in the way of actual information here. I guess it's time for the Lonely Planet...

first, I don't know - been to Nigeria and a bunch of places farther away in africa, never ghana. that said - ghana has an excellent reputation for bronzes. I would plan on buying at least one while you are there. I don't think that the food will be substantially different from Nigerian, starch from yam or corn, with spicy meat sauce variations. while it might not be the cuisine that you would want to enjoy for the rest of your life, eat the variations as much as you can while there.

what I enjoyed most about Nigeria was going out with locals to "clubs" where you would sit outside on plastic chairs, drinking cold beer and eating skewers of meat, listening to west african music. that was a huge amount of fun. oh, and buy music, too.

don't drink the tap water, don't eat raw unpeeled fruit or vegetables, don't go anywhere alone at night without asking somebody you know (or the concierge from your hotel) how safe it is. you'll have fun and be fine.

I think he can eat the raw, unpeeled fruit. But make sure you wash it thoroughly with bottled water. Going off of what Globe said, if the food is relatively similar to Nigerian food try pepper soup (usually with goat meat) or fish pepper soup if you come across it.

Anyway, I've asked a friend who [if I remember correctly] has been to Ghana a few times. Stay tuned...

Globe - The skewered meat or "suya" is absolutely addictive with the red pepper and onions. I've always been a little worried they use bushmeat but whatever it's damn good. I haven't been in a few years and still get cravings.

In all the places I've been in the world this has been one of my favorite things to do. I have fond memories of drinking beer and watching bra less local girls and capuchin monkeys in the jungle in Ecuador.
