so i woke up with a splitting headache and realized a little while ago that maybe the fact i hadn't eaten in 24 hours might have something to do with that. Head up to the sub shop craving a chicken philly. I order it on white, they're out of white bread. Fine I'll take it on wheat. Guy goes back and they are out of chicken. At least I got $2 off and a coupon for $2 off the next one. Ate that **** all up. 14 inches of meaty goodness.

I think the really well-heeled in Korea know that Korea doesn't have everything, and that's why none of them spend their time here.

We have a lot here, though. It's not a world supermarket, but there are smatterings of quality goods here and there if you are willing to pay for them, and that usually means a lot of markup. Nothing is cheap here, it's the most expensive place I can think of living a quality life in. Living here for 8 years, watching every new item come to supermarket shelves, to restaurant and bar menus, watching the internet stores, going to every black market and ethnic store, I know what they sell here and what they don't at almost any given time, I know better than any Korean person in the country. All of the things you listed though, we do have here, and some of them are available at a decent quality level. My girlfriend went out to get things for her baking and we came home with german Bauck flour, Elle de Vivre butter, de Zaan cocoa powder, and Wilton natural food colors. It's not a complete wasteland.

Department store supermarkets here are a bust, any mainstream shop is a bust; they cater not to people who cook, but people who don't know how to cook. The convenience food/snacks/chips sections are overwhelmingly larger than any other individual section of those stores, and those convenience foods here, I wouldn't even want to give them to victims of catastrophes in third world countries, they're absolute ****.

5-10 years ago, the supply scene was bleak. Nowadays, the ingredients are mostly there; the technique and knowledge is not, the restaurant scene is most definitely not.

I should turn this into a separate 'food things that are pissing me off' because Korean food culture enrages me to no end.

i researched for so long on the internet, but i didnt live in seoul at the time and it was a cultural wasteland around me.

divulge your secret food locations please

When I see cooking like that I wonder about their self respect.

At one point the girl had to take a call so I went and stood at the "bar" and watched those F***ers cook. I didn't see anyone tasting. What a disgrace...and really just a shame.

this is what gets me so often. just a total lack of engagement with the food. it's mechanical. they might as well be tightening wing nuts (no fran reference).

so i just ate a fair amount of hummus. It was OK and it got me thinking...while I quite like hummus, I don't get people who bust their nuts over hummus, especially when its just typically some **** picked up at the grocery store. its like just make some of that **** at home and it'll blow your mind how much better it can be. But still, its like it isnt going to be this sublime food no matter what. At least I don't think.

On the other hand, I don't get people who just hate hummus. It isn't like its going to overwhelm you with flavor, the texture is good....

Perhaps its just people with strong opinions about hummus.

I used to eat hummus every day for lunch. Then one day I puked hummus for hours and now I rarely touch the stuff.

That happens to me with every food I eat before vomiting. Luckily, the things are obscure and easily left alone with no regrets.

Grocery store hummus should be illegal.

Good hummus is great stuff, but what makes it sublime, is the other things you eat with it. Fresh ME oven break, good lamb shawarma, etc.

I understand your aversion.

This is what I am saying. Hummus is rarely, if ever, intrinsically as good as folks may want to believe/lie to themselves.

I can't man, there's assholes like the seouleats guy who pounce on info like that and **** it death until they get their pats from everybody, and achieve ultimate 'expert' foodie status and jack off to it.

Meanwhile, I am at home, eating well.

Perhaps you could tell him in a PM if he agrees not to divulge the secret.

My favorite chickens seem to have been discontinued. The replacement costs the same and the taste is far inferior.
