I was about to post in the pissed off thread about how my AC was broken and I was probably going to be out a couple grand, but then it suddenty occurred to me that it was my air filter. I was all "Oh yeah, you are supposed to change those every couple of years..."

Every couple of years? I always had to replace them every 6-8 months due to dust.

Think you're supposed to clean or replace monthly. Same filter cleans your heated air too.

depends on the filter/system. But honestly, more often is better...and good filters make a difference. I like the red 3m filtrete ones in the upper MERV ratings. Both the cheap ones AND the fancier high MERV rating filters can block too much air which makes the blower work too hard and reduces the efficiency of the system and costs you $$

Of course my current place has radiators so I don't have to deal with it....but I actually have a 20x20 box fan with a furnace filter taped on to the side that I try to run somewhere in my apartment while I am at work. Without the forced air system constantly exchanging and filtering the air, I find the air gets stale and a lot of dust and stuff accumulates. Running the standalone filter-fan seems to help a good amount (and costs exponentially less than a real air purifier)

I know better, but it's just not the kind of thing I think about until something goes wrong.

I just wrote a pretty damn good paragraph. Seven solid sentences. One of my better efforts. If this paragraph showed up in Nabokov's trash bin, it may have even been offered a drink.

No need to be a slave for life... Be a slave owner, much more rewarding.
