Not that I recall. Maybe in jest, or under the circumstances of being in a nice reataurant.

Yea...it was about restaurant behavior. I recall because I am a chronic plate-sopper. Mmmmmm sauce.

Yeah but clearly, you have never lived with a Japanese woman before. They can subsist for years on $3 meals, like rice, soup, and a tiny fish; and then out of the blue they will go and buy some foodstuff or do something that is eye-poppingly expensive and not particularly valuable, and not blink an eye - and the reply is that they feel/are fooled into believing (?) that's how much something should cost, like a $150 taxi ride or a hotel patisserie cake that costs $25 a slice. That is kind of how Japan is, I guess. Maybe it was like that in peasant Europe 200 years ago?

I once had this girlfriend, we got along famously, everything was great - we went to Hong Kong and I was goading her to buy some small souvenirs, something to take home - in the end she bought nothing, and then at the duty free on the way back, about 10 minutes before we got on the airplane, she went in and bought like $300 of chocolates. I told her that it didn't really make much sense, and she explained that she was gonna give them these people that she barely knew as gifts; I have come to understand that part of the equation better, but I still kind of go 'wtf?' when thinking about that day.
