I’m having a late lunch at a quiet French joint. A gang of old people invaded it. Literally walking around looking at **** like we are in the general store section of the god damn Cracker Barrel. They decided the place wasn’t for them and went down to the next place. I can’t wait for them to leave this world.

So how about paying to be unpaid labour? Student nurses do actual patient care and pay thousands of dollars in tuition to do it.
Amd PT interns pay their mentors for the privilege.

Amd PT interns pay their mentors for the privilege.

Therapists do free labor via field placements while they are in school and almost always far exceed the required hours (and also, at least at my wife's school, can start or end outside the school year...limiting your ability to do paid summer work).

And then some of them pay their supervisors for supervision while getting their full license (in addition to obviously not receiving their full billing rates because they are working under the supervisor's license and they take a cut in exchange for doing the billing and taking on liability)...at least my wife landed a salaried position so everything is "included"...

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the former (the latter seems like BS no matter what). If you are a current tuition-paying student and you are getting *required* real world experience for your program of study, then I can understand the justifications for it being unpaid. Discussion of field experiences also seemed to be an important part of some classes/assignments, so it is clearly integral to the education.

On the other hand, they are doing real work and they aren't getting paid. That's a load of crap in general. Especially since my wife's first year placement (as part of the "general" 1st year of an MSW program before you specialize) had nothing to do with her intended career. She was doing social worker work with refugees--zero therapy-content.

I get that a lot of these organizations have grown to depend on that free labor, but it is still bullshit and only happens because 80% of people in a school of social work are bleeding heart 20-something idealists (the same ones who take underpaid nonprofit jobs) who haven't yet figured out that by doing "good work" for free they are actually contribution to a discriminatory system and ******* themselves over.

That last bit is amusing though. Those kids ******* love to protest ****. It was kids from the social work school who were spearheading a huge grad student effort to boycott tuition because of COVID...

But they haven't figured out how to fight to change a system that exploits them for free labor and creates huge barriers to entry for the underprivileged people who might actually be ideally situated to be a social worker or therapast serving their own communities...

This photo popped up in the highlighted photos feature thing on my iPhone today:

BE0F545B-7348-43F9-91CF-09DDD91C90EA.jpeg

It was taken by a friend of mine at their office at the Washington Navy Yard in DC on 16 September 2013 when a disgruntled worker came in and shot up the place killing 12 and injuring some more. The photo was taken through the blinds of their office window while they were on lockdown and shows some Navy Corpsman and other medical personnel running towards the shooting as the events were unfolding

Perhaps i'll return triumphant with a new baby in tow.

Either way, Be well friends.
See our previous posts about that likely being a bad idea.
