I've bolded the operative phrase for you, conne.
You have to make the drive.

Agree with the Rubester. If he's your lifeline to your next job - you've got to at least turn up for a couple of hours. Pack the day before or something.

Well, he didn't invite me personally. He is (at least until January 1st!) an elected official and one of his aides is doing the invitations. But I see your point guys.

I would like to go but I don't want to risk missing the flight. Ugh. I planned on sending him a thoughtful Christmas note, which I will still do.

I worked harder than I ever have for five months straight, on his behalf, and he's aware of that. Missing a Christmas party that will be packed with ass-kissers and sycophants (my people

) won't sink my chances when/if the opportunity for a job arises. And it's unenjoyment!

Yeah, like he doesn't get a ton of thoughtful Christmas notes from a ton of other people who want his assistance or what-have-you. Good luck standing out in that metier.

...

So, what's pissing me off? Energy gels, particularly the fact that I either buy them one at a time, or en masse - all the same damn flavor. I can't find an assortment of what I want (Clif Blox) anywhere. and, I hate to say it, but 24 double-servings of margarita with extra salt just is not doing it for me.

My wife's ******* job. We host our annual Christmas party next Saturday night. She and I have both already taken vacation time next Thursday and Friday to prepare. Wife's boss' boss just decided they need to have a f*cking meeting in Dallas next week and she must go next Wed, Thurs, and Friday, leaving me home alone with the baby to clean and decorate in addition to my usual food responsibilities. ****

Hmmm, considering that this is Conne we're talking about, I wouldn't think 'standing out' would really apply here.
