I think the new level that Gronk represents is that now we have “analysts” who can’t even reach a basal level of human communication.

We have certainly had “analysts” who can’t analyze (or even be coherent), but at least they’ve been able to shout complete sentences

Brady is horrible in the booth. I cannot believe Fox shuffled Greg Olson off to their B or C squad in favor of Brady... Well, I can believe it. I just don't want to.

As for the commercials I agree they're overall pretty lame. I think they've really gone down hill over the 7 or 8 years. These days 90% of the commercials just seem to be a competition among the brands to see how many celebrities they can cram into their commercial. Instead of spending that money on a celebrity, spend it on some good writing instead!

Emmitt Smith is still the GOAT at not being able to speak in complete sentences.

The thing about Gronk, Smith, and Lynch is that they give off likeable vibes. They may be semi-incomprehensible when they get excited, and they get excited a lot, but they seem like guys who'd be fun to be on a pub quiz team with at the local bar, even though you know the team would lose horribly. Brady, on the other hand, seems like the kind of guy you'd climb out the bathroom window of the bar to avoid, and you definitely would never leave your drink unattended with him.

I would think that after his horrible performances in those Hertz commercials that nobody would want Brady in front of any camera where he's required to talk or pretend to be a human, but I guess not.

My hot take is that you can get an announcer to bring 99% of the quality for a fraction of the cost.

I genuinely have no idea how agents duped network execs into paying out these astronomical sums for announcers.

Brady is no better/worse than Olsen to me. He's also no better than Moose Johnston or Charles Davis.

Unless you're AWFUL (I'm thinking Nate Robinson in that awful Player's Night schtick), you're just...fine?

Backhanded compliment, to be sure, but the idea of shelling out $40 mil to hear Brady talk about a Cover 2 just blows my mind. FOMO leverage to the absolute max.

The problem is he doesn't even talk about cover 2 - he just talks in general platitudes. It's weird because when you heard him being candid in interviews, he's great! He goes really in depth, what he sees in coverages/game plans etc, but then... he brings nothing on that during his announcing. It's like he's overthinking and gets psyched out.

That's my take on all of this as well. In a candid, relaxed setting Brady is... fine. But once there's any sort of formality involved he becomes so robotic and boring.

Also, his voice is annoying.

The Duracell commercial where Brady’s revealed to be battery powered is great.

There are a lot of good ex-players that are good announcers (Tony Romo? Troy Aikman?), and a simple screen test should reveal whether they are any good before you actually hire them. Fox probably just got a little target fixation on Brady and ignored the usual ways you evaluate whether a candidate is any good for a particular job.

Also, Brady was positively wooden in any and all interviews he did as a player! Is that not a sign??

Aikman is awful. You can hear and see the brain damage from CTE.

Romo is probably the best announcer.

While it is crazy how much they pay announcers like Brady, the half-time show guys make zero sense. Jimmy Johnson makes like $2m/yr.

Jason Witten was horrible. He was so bad as an announcer that he decided to suit up and play again.

Aikman is great! He's one of the few announcers who actually calls out the refs if theyre incorrect (or coaches if they do something dumb)

Terry Bradshaw isn't looking too good now. His Parkinson's or whatever he has was painfully obvious post Super Bowl.
