Maybe not pissed but annoyed: As many of us single folks can relate, you can go for the longest time without a decent dating prospect, then two very good ones come along at the same time. You can date both simultaneously, but at some point you have to choose (if the choice wasn't already made for you). Why couldn't one come along a year ago?

Downside to living in a small market: wife just got a federal jury summons…

…nearest federal court is 2.5-3 hours away.

She requested a deferral (not even an exclusion) on account of still breastfeeding and being the primary caregiver for our infant child and was almost immediately denied.

They pay for a hotel the night before but WTF? 6 hours of driving in the winter to sit in a room and do nothing?
How often are federal trials single day deals? Never? And on the trial transcripts I’ve read, I’ve never seen a federal judge not excuse a juror from a long trial with an excuse like “hey, a baby depends on me, I live 3 hours away so can’t be home every night, I can’t be here for a week or two…and if you try to make me, I will frequently delay court by demanding time to pump”.

And to be clear, I’ve always been a proponent of jury duty (and was sad when my last one got canceled!)—but the deferral process exists for a reason.

Call her again in 6 months. Let me go in her place. Whatever. But a nursing mother should not be expected to sit on a jury 3 hours from home.

I didn't have a job that paid me for jury duty and every time I made it to selection I got rejected for having a close family member who was in law enforcement. I just threw 'em in the trash.

You think that's the small market effect? Because that's crazy strict and I can't see it happening around here, though I'm not familiar with local federal courts.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)
