Of course you should use your own judgment. What I’ve taken from our extended family’s journey with members who have mental health struggles is that we absolutely should make it clear that they are welcome, but leave it to them to decide whether to take us up on the invitation.
Yeah im trying to not be upset about it. Like if she's truly that hurt by us then fine. And if it's a matter of her brain not letting her be able to join us then what can we do.

What if you don’t have to drive, it’s one of the kids?

Considering they are 8 and 14, I'm definitely not getting in the car with one of them behind the wheel! 😆

As for not wanting to spend Thanksgiving with your family... I always cite 2020 as the best year ever for holidays because I did not have to see any extended family. If I were single without children, I would have been perfectly happy to spend the holidays entirely alone. I've got nothing against my family, I would just rather be alone or just with my wife and kids (but not in a car on a road trip) 99% of the time.

When I was in the Marines I used to always take duty (plus some $$$) from other Marines over Thanksgiving or Christmas so that I had a good excuse to not go home. I also learned that there were some added perks about having duty during the holidays - other Marines or their wives would come by with tons of food and little gifts and I was lucky that our CO would usually give us a full day off afterwards. Plus, if you had duty at the barracks most of the Marines were gone so it was always quiet. The absolute best was when I had duty on Christmas day in 2020 2000 and a group of girls from a sorority at UNC Wilmington drove up to Lejeune to come around to those of us on duty in a few places to spread some Christmas cheer. I was set to get out of the Marines a few months after that and seriously considered moving to Wilmington for school based almost entirely on that Christmas!

Edit: that wonderful Christmas day duty was in 2000... not 2020.

Well I convinced her to visit. Let's see how long it takes for me to get annoyed with her.

I had duty, not voluntary, one Christmas. There were probably 10-12 of us who had our own Christmas party in the barracks and I'll just say it later involved MPs and a month's restriction except for duty and chow.

Why the F do idiot drivers swerve left before making a right turn? It's very common for someone to signal a right turn, and then change lanes to the left (frequently into the oncoming lane) before turning right. What's the purpose (and origin) of this moronic and dangerous (and sometimes even illegal) maneuver?

They learned it driving big trucks in the military?

Don't blame me. I never drove anything bigger than an Econoline van!

Except for Ospreys. Seems like the Marines have an unlimited supply of them.

They didn't want them and Marines are expendable.

They are increasing the radius of the turn, allowing them to take it at a speed much greater than their driving ability would suggest.

They are increasing the radius of the turn, because their massive truck drives like an actual truck allowing them to take it at a speed much greater than their driving ability would suggest.

They lack the ability to see the relationship of a radius to an angle

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
