The traditional critieria include that a men's sport must widely practiced in at least 75 countres and on four continents, and for women's sports, 40 countries and three continents. The numbers change from time to time, and the IOC has its own quirky definitions of countries and continents, which I don't follow closely any more. There are also other criteria, but whether any individual person has heard of the sport is pretty irrelevant.

I have no interest in watching quite a few of the sports, but they're all very popular in many countries.

"... which I don't follow closely any more."

I guess I don't! These specific country and continent numbers were discontinued some time after the XX Olympic Winter Games, Torino 2006, and I missed it. Encyclopedia Brittanica online has not caught up either. Still, they do not pick sports unless they are widely practice in a lot of places.

I haven't watched any but I was immediately annoyed hearing Mike Tirico refer to the athletes as B Girl Ami and B Girl Nicka. Total cringe.

Setting aside the weird cultural appropriation, isn't breakdancing really just another gymnastics sport? Within that context, I would have to rate it way higher than forking trampolining or "rhythm" gymnastics, which is super lame. Conceptually, it's also not like less of a sport than surfing, which is judged based on I have no idea and is incredibly boring to watch, unless you enjoy seeing people waiting to catch waves while the announcers talk about beaches they like.

Obviously there are way more sports than their used to be and a lot of them are super niche. I'm happy that all these random people in these sports that have like 50 people worldwide get to compete internationally and win olympic medals, but I think the medal count needs to be updated to weight the medals based on how much I give a fork. Similar to decathlon/heptathlon scoring perhaps.

Damn usa really is cursed in thr 4x100m relay
Only the men. The women crushed it, like usual. The best was when Sha'carri Richardson, halfway through her leg, looked over at the second and third place finishers with that "y'all ain't fast enough to catch me" expression on her face

That story of that Australian breakdancer who made a mockery of Olympics (on top of the mockery that breakdancing made by being in the Olympics in the first place) sounded oddly familiar. So i did a little googling:

When your wife asks you, "Do you want to do [insert unpleasant, tedious task you don't care about in the slightest], or do you want me to do it?", the correct answer is never, "you should do it."

"Gaslighting" used to have a specific meaning. Now, it's almost always used as a synonym for simply lying.
