That I've put $500 into my car in the last month, not to mention a few Saturday afternoons swinging wrenches. I love working on cars, but this is getting ******* ridiculous, I'm spending most of my free time doing more work. Also, I still need tires...another $500 and another Sat. afternoon...****!

And I can't put any $$$ into my wardrobe.

My ex put up an "in a relationship with..." on facebook, I pretty much knew she was seeing someone by now, but still. Feels like I have been hit in the solar plexus, actual physical pain. Awesome way to start the working week.

You should have de-friended her already. Do it now or you will be seeing pics of her and some douchebag in a few weeks. Don't even consider re-friending her until you have some pics of the Playboy bunnies that you had a threesome with up on your profile.

Just found out my great aunt passed away this morning, about an hour and a half ago.

I am away from home right now on work, a half a world away. Apparently she went into the hospital last week with some blood clots in her legs, a complication from a broken hip she suffered just a few months ago. I guess to the rest of my family in-town who knew what was happening this was not completely unexpected, but it was a shock to me just 30 minutes ago to hear the news. She was otherwise full of spit and vinegar at 89 years old.

She was a black sheep, an iconoclast, an egotist, and a legend all at the same time. Rhodes scholar, successful artist, one-time bullfighter (literally fought in the ring a few times in Mexico in the 1960s), world traveler. At various times in her life, she lived (alone - she was married for 50 years but she and her husband never lived together after their first year of marriage - it was almost a relationship of patronage) in Pakistan, Northern India, Mexico, France. Before these places were relatively civilized. (not that France is civilized today) She was instrumental in my parents meeting. I would literally not be here without her.

She was a pain **********, a tireless self-promoter never one to let the truth stand in the way of a good story, a notorious know-it-all, and very pushy in ways, but a most brilliant woman and someone who experienced more in her little pinky than most of us can even dream about, and generous in her own way with her spirit, her possessions, and her experiences. One of the last times I saw her, this past winter, we shared some ancient port in front of her roaring fireplace. I want to say it was like 50 years old because I think that's what she told me, but a) she could have been inflating the story in her usual way and b) I don't know anything about port and wouldn't have known if she was, but I can tell you that this stuff was just unbelievable. A typical Aunt Elaine experience. In her final years she lived only about 20 minutes from me after living most of her life in Normandy. I kept saying I would visit more often. I didn't make it as often as I should have.

Saddest of all, my little daughter will never get to see what a frightfully passionate, mold-breaking, independent woman this was.

If you're reading this and have an older relative you've been meaning to go see more of, get on the horn right now and make plans to do it this weekend. It's worth it.

You are not wrong, its just hard.
I made it clear I wanted a bit more distance, a little less communication a few days ago, and I wonder if the "going official" is a response to that. We were just supposed to be on a break whilst we were in different countries, but it has not turned out like that.
I think you are right and a bit more distance is not enough, I have to cut off all contact till after the playboy bunnies.

Sorry for your loss Douglas, it sounds like she was a remarkable woman.

My condolences, Douglas. It sounds like she had a long, amazing life; I hope you're able to find solace in that.

Douglas, I am sorry for your loss. It's hard to lose someone like that, particularly when you're away.

Sorry for the loss Douglas, but she certainly sounds like a person that lived life on her terms. I'm blowing two weeks of vacation to spend time with my mother (80th b-day party) and my terminal brother. I agree, you need to make time to visit with folks, as none of us are here forever.
