Oh, ouch, schoolboy. However, the fact I've played WoW does not change the reality I have managed literally thousands of employees over the years and you have managed how many? Run how many P&Ls? Learned from experience what sort of things to look for in difficult senior managers? I mean, you think this person did not have a hidden agenda? That's the difference between being a schoolboy and an experienced executive.

I hear you. This is pretty much par for the course in consulting (and I'm sure plenty of other industries as well...) Partners sit on some RFP or half finished pitch deck or whatever for 2 weeks until the Friday before it's due (and it's always Friday afternoon). Then they need the updated deck before start of day Monday.

    Sigh.

I met up with a friend yesterday in Coney Island. I drove all the way down there with the fear that she was going to ask to borrow a substantial amount of money. She's in her early 30's, and a total princess that was financially cut off from her parents too late. When she started her pitch about borrowing money and being able to pay it back in less than a month I just cut her off and left. I feel like shit for doing that and had to deal with my wife later that night (who would've tried to stand strong and not give her money but succumb to the friend's latest sob story of her fault). My wife naturally had a million questions about what was essentially a 10min encounter. Of course she could just call the friend, but she doesn't want to deal with the stress and would rather start annoying the shit out of me going over every detail over and over until we almost started a meltdown fight ourselves.

I hate seeing these friends that were awesome back when we were in our late teens and 20's but are total messes into their 30's...

My company goes through so much paper and ink making slides look pretty it is insane. Sometimes I answer my phone and say, "Booth printing press, how can I help you?"

Oh yeah. The color printers in our offices are always slammed. I'm actually shocked they don't go out of order more than they do.

I still remember getting hard lessons on decks very early in my career. Partner would literally take out a ruler and measure everything to make sure every slide had consistent alignment. And God help you if you had used inconsistent font sizes.

Did you literally just stand up and walk away, or stop her say no and such?

The funniest thing is that most of the slides are for internal customers, not clients!

Hahaha, yeah, that's kinda nuts then. The decks we make for internal engagements or initiatives are decidedly shittier than the decks we put together for client pitches or deliverables. As they should be!

I stood up and walked away. I had a ton of stuff barreled and ready to say, but I didn't want to make a mess of it. You start spewing out cliche-ish things like "well, money's tight" and even more resentment can happen. The longer the conversation goes stuff starts to slip like a recent/future vacation or something. It was such an asshole move, and I feel bad, but it only could've gotten worse the longer we talked.

Ever consider that you're not as cool as you think you are?

Ah, too cool for school. Got it.

So how are 'experienced executives' described?

    Lulz. As "total douchebags."

So give me your thoughts on this guy's hidden agenda on Friday.

If I can dip into my one area of expertise, he may not have had an agenda. He could just be incompetent.
