Not betrayal. Sometimes we must be against people for people.

that is a shit position to be in.

i was there about 10 years ago, and it was sad and miserable. i guess try your best to help/find him help. i found if you push to hard, they only distance themselves from you. love and support go a long way, but you have to make sure you are not enabling. its a hard line to walk, and i wish you and your brother the best.

What kind of hard drugs? Weed is not a hard drug.

It will be hard but I would suggest going to him directly on it and let him know he has you worried.

Does he live at home with your parents? If so, and if he refuses to shape up after you speak with him then I would say you have a duty to let your parents know what he's doing. If he's caught at home with drugs your parents stand a chance of having their house seized by the government. That's a risk they should be informed about.

    He is mid 30's.

...I know some will say it is his own choice; however, last night my oldest brother drove him down 125 mile drive to drop him off at my house because he couldn't handle it anymore. Noone else in my family knows (to my knowledge)....it is way more than just drinking, my parents are oblivious as my mom is very orthodox christian and doesn't know what getting drunk is like....

It is his choice whether to use drugs, but you have a choice in how you respond to it. Being a loving brother doesn't mean you have to make his misery your own.

Well, what I'm about to post feels insignificant.

The only thing that matters is what will help your brother. If you genuinely think that telling your parents will lead to him getting the help he needs, then that's what you should do.

On a totally different note, dealing with this on an almost daily basis pisses me off. How is this not a fucking safety hazard?
