    my mom got suddenly sick. something with her kidneys. My sister and brother already went ahead and are with her, I'll be there this Saturday.

    I'm pissed because apparently the local hospital has a total asshole nephrologist who actually almost got into a physical altercation with my older brother. Apparently he never was aware that my mom's a doctor herself and was called out by her when he started dismissing my mother's thoughts on what could be the problem. The Nephrologist got embarrassed and actually started berating my mother and all hell broke loose.

    I'm also pissed that I can't even get an idea of whats going on they wont email/fax/relay her diagnostic results and patient history because of the brouhaha.

    My parents are in their mid 70's now and I'm really scared about the prospect of them getting really sick or dying very soon. My father just had a stroke last year (recovering nicely), now my mom sick too. Ughh...

    At least you're taking care of it early. I've been suffering from joint pain for years. My doctor, having been told this over at least four years and having admitted I almost definitely have arthritis, finally recommended I see a rheumatologist. A week before I moved to a few miles south of the Arctic Circle...

    sorry to hear this. doctors here can be like fucking assholes, feeling like they're fucking bigshot big fishes in a small small pond. tis one of the reasons my sibling also cannot see herself coming back and practice here. good luck to your mom.


    I've been on the fence the rest of the day with going through this, but this is exactly what I thought- better take care of it early than having the possibility of something more serious as she grows older. thing is my wife is a bigger puss than my daughter when it comes to hospitals and needles, so when it comes to stuff like this its dad's job.

    quick question... is your daughter going to be tall? are your wife/you/immediate family tall? this could literally just be growing pains especially since she's at that earlier girls growth spurt age range.

    couple the rapid growth and pains involved with it and a lowered tolerance of pain seen in children and its really tough to figure out - in lieu of a real pathologic process.

    when bones are growing rapidly at the epiphyseal ends it can manifest as pain. ask any really tall person about joint pain as a child and they usually all have some sort of horrible story about it - which usually goes away when they hit mid-late 20s.

    I have an extremely strong team of direct reports. Tenure mainly ranges from eight to 17 years. The only outlier has been here 2.5 years. This person is exceedingly strong in all areas of the job except interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. I have been working with this person since hire but yesterday something hot came up and :fu: as to this person's ability to deal with it in a straightforward, truthful fashion that shows ownership. This direct is so good at so many things but the continued inability to achieve personal reflection and insight is like a Greek tragedy.

    Sorry to hear about your uncle, hope it's treatable.


    Those traits are exceedingly hard to train. As with, say, empathy - some would argue that you either have it or you don't. At best, any tendencies towards ownership and/or reflection may be there but buried beneath the tendency to save face.

    You nailed it. This person will jettison like a jet dumping fuel before a crash landing vs. the smallest perceived chance that they screwed up will happen.

    I relate to this a lot this week. I am having a similar issue with my main direct report. He does a lot of things well but if I try to work with him on his weak areas, which are mostly just slow areas, he gets defensive and makes a million excuses why he isn't performing better. The crappy part is that I know exactly why he isn't performing better but he has to find the solutions himself. It's mostly time and project management, he has all the tools in front of him...just needs to use them.

    I agree helping directs find the solution is exceedingly valuable and I think 99% of the time the best route. I've walked this person through so many things like that and they just refuse...actually, I'm beginning to think they are unable to...internalize some methodology. The two huge flaws are loving drama and wanting to get those involved all worked up (when they should be defusing things) and stopping data gathering as soon as some data that they like is found. No reality testing or testing for fit.

    ^it can be taught, but has to be in a systematic "check list or schematic" type of way. The classic example is Tom Cruise who always seems to know how to work a room/person/interviewer in a scientific way. He's obviously very calculating, but gets away with it because his way is so completely thought out.

    the contrast is Andy Warhol who by all accounts was the opposite (warm greeting and very receptive) and then turned into a semi-aspergers-savant type of character (some say by choice) after observing how that type of personality trait is encouraged in the art world.
