My body presented me with its birthday present this morning...in the form of a root canal.

The numbness has pretty much worn off and I don't feel any pain whatsoever (although I did take one vicodin) so that is good...but there is a giant temporary filling that is supposed to prevent me from chewing on the left side of my mouth and I don't go back in until next friday :(

    2 things:

1 - I tried to order 2 pairs of shoes from a company in the UK on Wednesday. Their website is fairly primitive and dumped me to a third-party CC processor for the monetary part of the transaction. I clicked submit and walked away from my computer but only when I returned about an hour later after a meeting did I see there was some final weird screen that asked me to submit again. When I did so, it said it could not process because I was timed out. I sent an e-mail to the company, as I figured they have my order, just no payment yet, but I haven't received any kind of confirmation e-mails and I could no longer click "back" because of all the redirects and such. It's been 2 days, no answer, no hits on my card, nothing nada. Now I have to decide whether to call the UK and try to get these dumb bastards rolling or just give up and order these shoes from somewhere else, which is going to be a PITA because I haven't found anyone who could sell me both pairs at the same time and thereby avoid paying expensive shipping twice.

    :fu:

2 - It's Friday, 4:15, I've been murdering it productivity-wise the last two days, was feeling great about coasting into the weekend having made some big strategic decisions and turning the corner on a few large items, feeling good about work after some recent struggles.... when the phone rings. It's the manager of one of our satellite facilities calling to say he's been served a court summons relative to an employment suit being brought against us. I won't go into any details other than to say this is being brought by a temp who was with us for less than three weeks so it has to be baseless but at the same time I know this must have been taken on contingency by someone who thinks he's got something so I'm wondering WTF about this I don't know. Still prolly nothing; I just checked this personnel file and our records are clean as a whistle and support what I know to be the story (to this point) but what a shit way to move into the weekend after a good week.

good luck with the nuisance suit, douglas.

if you're down with cleaning puss-filled open wounds that smells like rotting meat, or wiping the shit off some old wrinkly lady's ass, or getting blood squirted to your face from some druggie having a seizure while you're trying to stick a needle to him, then by all means....

I bet the majority of folks in STL doesn't know that :)

T, have you considered a different lifestyle, one that finds you in your easy chair, with a bag of chips in one hand and a beer on the other, watching breaking bad or the nfl or something?

^^ Hey, I thought you had warm feelings in your heart for the STL! (Not saying you're wrong, though. :) )

I've been grading papers tonight. One of my students informed me that at the end of Descartes's First Meditation, it seemed that knowledge was in taters. Now that I know that, I'm changing my diet for sure.

She texted me after work asking me if I had plans - said that I was free after going out for dinner, so she asked me to come watch a movie with her at her new place (she doesn't really live there yet - still has to set up her bed and stuff, which will lead to trouble down the line). I say sure, meet up with and her niece at a bar, but then some of her niece's friends show up, and we all head back to her place to watch a movie together.

No biggie, the guys were planning to go out, so they'd leave after the movie and take the niece with them. Just had to have some patience. Half an hour after the movie ends, they finally leave - score! We start making out, get touchy-feely...her phone rings. Her mom. She's waiting in the car outside to give her a ride home.

But still, no big deal, we got this far, and we can continue tomorrow - patience is a virtue, bla bla bla. Get a text from her this morning that she feels really bad about last night, that it was wrong, she's still too in love with her ex, etc.

Odds are that I'll have sex with her eventually. But still - so close.

No, never. The closest I get is a book in one hand and a glass of bourbon in the other.

I have season 1 of Breaking Bad on DVD and have watched the first 15 minutes, so far. Baby steps.

    ...

good luck with the suit, Douglas. and the shoes.

Below is my summary of the procedure women typically follow when they are romantically interested in someone other than their current boyfriends or husbands:

    1. Actively and vigorously pursue what they want
    2. Get what they want
    3. Have a moral revelation
    4. Take a mulligan

Step 3--the moral revelation--always functions retrospectively, and never prospectively. This is a great convenience.

In my experience, men follow a similar course of action, except they skip step 3, which seems superfluous to them.

Worked an event at a store last night. I knew this store was a shithole before I went in. I normally would have hired out this one, for a few reasons I just didn't. The customers were the grossest people I have ever seen. 2 people smelled so strong of urine and shit that I could smell them as soon as they walked in. One of the guys had only 1 tooth, it looked like a walrus tusk. An obese guy comes in with one of those old lady wheeled, foldable buggies with an oxygen tank attached. It looked like the guy threw up on his shirt and never washed it. I was there for 3 hours. Fuck.
