I can't comment on on Alternative Apparel's thermals, but I went to American Apparel a couple of days ago to look at theirs and was disappointed. The fabric is very, very thin; I don't see how it could possibly keep you warm at all. The cut is probably slimmer than most outdoors brands, but I can't really justify $20 for the cut alone.

my rule of thumb is to buy cold weather gear from sources in cold climates

was that helpful?

No experience with the Alt App thermals. The American Apparel version isn't that slim, IME, and like many thermals it's got a lot of give--if you're layering under close-fitting tshirts, I might actually advise sizing down. Nice long arms, though.

My favorite thermal right now (out of maybe 5, nothing special thermals) is actually from Urban Outfitters. I think it's this one. Tight weave with a little elastic, solid-feeling cuffs (avoid their "winterlite", which looks OK but is kind of delicate and cut oddly). I know there are higher quality thermals out there, with tech-y or woolen fabrics, but I don't have a lot of need for that.

American Apparel thermals are highly disappointing. I was excited to try one on and it did not meet my expectations.
