I may be able to find copies of the Japanese Magazine dedicated to those who appreciate fine shoes "The World of High-end Shoes Vol. 2." A copy was recently sold on ebay by forum member naturlaut. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MESO:IT Please send me a private message if interested. Bic

Just recieved my copy, and I must say it was worth the $$

Now, if only I could read Japanese... It's really not fair, there is obviously a LOT more info available in Japan about shoes than there is here.

Andrew,

I realize I may be opening a Pandora's box here, but would you be able to photograph/scan a few pages of the mag?

I'd really like to see the Lattanzi and Branchini pages.

Banks:

I believe that this is a yearly volume.  Volume 1 was first published sometime last year, with Volume 2 appearing this year.  I do not have my copies on hand, so it is difficult for me to offer a specific comparison, but Volume 2 contains profiles of about 100 more shoes than Volume 1.

Naturlaut pointed out that Volume 2 has a discussion of the changes in E. Green lasts, and a map of Northampton with contact information for the various factories. I believe that these two features are not included in Volume 1.

Yes, I will be doing this, though it may take me some time :)

I actually have a few more copies if anyone is interested --- no, I won't sell them at $182 (though I won't complain)

The publisher of this magazine will not ship overseas unless: 1) you were mentioned in the magazine (thus all shoemakers mentioned will have a copy), 2) you are part of some Japanese bookstore that sells Japanese magazines (like Kinokuniya). I could scan photos, but somewhere imageshack is not working.

Would Japanese bookstores in the US carry this? I know they carry those Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc. magazines.

I know they carry those Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc. magazines.
I have only tried Kinokuniya in Manhattan.  As far as I know, distribution is really limited, due to its specific content (how many shoe addicts can there be?).  The 'mother' issue of this magazine is called "Men's EX", which, beside this shoe Appreciation, also publishes one dedicated to suit/shirt pornography.  These are special issues that come out at very irregular intervals.  At present, Vol. 2 is still circulating, albeit limitedly (even in Tokyo); release date for Vol. 3 is still not known yet.  I have an old issue of the suit Appreciation, and am looking for a more current one, but couldn't find it anywhere (in Japan or Hong Kong).

If you happened to be in Italy, you should see it at any of the shoe-maker shops (Bonora, Petrocchi, etc.) as they were all featured in the magazine.

It's one thing if you have an obsession, it's another if a collective group of addicts could put up periodicals in such systematic manner.  I really admire that.  In this current issue, in order to do a review on Gatto, they had to send someone (lucky bastard) to make ... 5 pairs of shoes --- which is the required first order at Gatto.  In the suit issue, they sent 3 guys of different built and size to make the exact same suit/style from the same tailor just for comparison (navy 2-button and white shirt).

On a side note, those LV, Gucci 'catalogs' are really cheap, some as low as 500-yen (US$5).  This magazine costs 1400-yen (about US$15); and chances are, it will stay in your bookshelf/library instead of your magazine rack.

One note:

ISBN #s:

The World of High-End Shoes Volume 1: 4418021507

The World of High-End Shoes Volume 2: 441804132x

I saw them on Amazon(.co.jp) for maybe $12 US each.
I called Kinokuniya in NYC and asked them to order them for me.  They told me that they could get both of them to me for $43.20, airmail included.  Hopefully this works out.

I went to the C & J factory shop on Saturday - as one might expect, there were a few Japanese gentlemen there. I noted that they had brought with them this magazine. They kindly allowed me to peruse it at my leisure, and I must say that it was impressive.

There is a little tourist map to Northampton shoe manufacturers in this volume.

It has been a while since I checked, but there also may be special coupon offers (free polish, shoe trees, a 20% discount) from some of the featured firms to patrons that bring the volume with them.

I just ordered vols. 1 & 2 from a Japanese bookstore in London; should be here in 3 to 4 weeks.

Thanks to the ISBN #s, banksmiranda so kindly has provided, this was not a problem at all. The three bookshops I did contact were all willing to order them (although quoted prices varied greatly: the most expensive one wanted some 2/3 more than the cheapest one).

For London readers:
JP-Books (Mitsukoshi department store) / 14-20 Regent Street / 020 7839 4839, said they usually stock vol. 1 (although they are out of stock at the moment and are expecting a new delivery).

Any Japanese bookshop should be able to order them. (And if enough copies are going abroad, maybe the publishers will consider for the next issue an English text supplement.)

Shoe-nuts are a strange lot. Naturlaut had great success with the Japanese shoe-magazine, which sold for $ 180.00. Here someone copied him and did very well too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MEWA:IT Taking into account this magazine has only come out recently and is available at every well-stocked French newsagent for, I believe, € 6.90 (about $ 7.50).
