BTW Kinokuniya in NYC worked out. They cost a bit more than initially thought, (inclusive of shipping, $52 in the end vs their quote of $42), but still not bad.

Shoe-nuts are a strange lot. Naturlaut had great success with the Japanese shoe-magazine, which sold for $ 180.00. Here someone copied him and did very well too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MEWA:IT Taking into account this magazine has only come out recently and is available at every well-stocked French newsagent for, I believe, € 6.90 (about $ 7.50).
Actually, I had a better offer than $180 off eBay --- the Kiton agent in one of the European countries (which shall remain unnamed) offered a bunch of new Kiton ties (for 2005) and cash for the magazine. I had no intention to make such quick cash initially. I purchased a number of copies from my recent Tokyo trip to give to friends (yes, Thracozaag, you are not yet forgotten), and I was merely selling my leftovers. They cost about US$15, and I thought if I could sell $30 I would be happy. I ended up earning a new pair of shoes just selling two copies of the magazine. This has got to be my brightest eBay moment.

Good for you.
That's how Bill Gates has begun, with a clever idea.

Although I doubt somewhat, he directed his first windfall into a pair of shoes.

A Bonora wholecut, to be exact. Wish Imageshack would work so I could post a picture.

So can anyone else recommend any other rather odd Japanese periodicals about shoes?

A few months ago, Esquire Japan published a one off magazine called "Last."  It is very similar to the World of High End Shoes, though if memory serves, it didn't have photos of as many shoes.  I paged through "Last," but was not too interested, so I didn't buy it.  I haven't seen it on bookstore shelves since early summer June.

There also was also a volume devoted to Leather goods called uÅ vv. It had profiles of shoes, belts, wallets etc. For shoe aficianadoes, Vol. 2 of the World of High End shoes is the tops as far as I am concerned. Vol 1 and Last are neck and neck for position 2.

I have this too, though I think it is 'outdated' as I don't see them on newstand or bookstores anymore in Japan. I enjoy the section on leather goods very much, as it gave me plenty of ideas for my next briefcase. Incidentally, there is a place that Japanese love to go in Rome for briefcases. It's called Saddler's Union, if anyone's interested. They also make bespoke shoes (which I ordered earlier this month). The two craftsmen there can't speak more than a few words in English, but I see that 50% of their business come from Japanese.

Saddler's Union.... is that on Condotti? The same side of the road as Brioni?

Yes it is. Have you any experience with them? I was there because some Japanese freak (who else?) recommended the place to me. It's on the same side as Brioni, but I found it when I came out from Battistoni.

My wife bought a soft sided briefcase there a few years back. I personally don't remember the shoes that well

Maybe in a daze after spending quite a bit for shirts at Battistoni

How big are the scans? You can always make use of some free hosting site like aloofhosting.com.

Today I got my copies, "World of high-end shoes" vols. 1 and 2.  Of course I cannot read a single Japanese sign, so I'm sitting here like a kid with a picture book, admiring the pictures.

It might be worth starting to learn Japanese.
