There does seem to be a very strong and persistent attachment to workwear here—which was last culturally relevant in the late 00s / early 10s. Today, in NYC, I only see it on 40-somethings (my age, to be fair), who don’t particularly care about style or fashion. They tend to be unwitting holdouts wearing what was normal for them 15-20 years ago.

I’m not saying it’s good or bad to keep up with fashion, but I do think it’s strange and dissonant to knock streetwear for being “so ten years ago” when one is wearing clothes that look “so twenty years ago.” Plus, the reality is that streetwear has inculcated fashion at all levels in a way that workwear never did. It didn’t go away—it just went everywhere.

Who on here is wearing workwear?

There's a few guys like Zissou who have always done heritage menswear, but then most of us tend to post varying degrees of capital F fashion and streetwear influenced stuff.

Most of the current mainstream trend at the moment is a reinvigoration of prep in more palatable ways. Which is what zoomer fast fashion labels are putting out left right and centre.

I don't think NYC occupies some type of unique space more than other global cities.

@nevergreen had been described by others as wearing workwear-based clothing. A lot of what I see here looks to be in similar vein.

I only raise what I observe in NYC to give context for my own perspective and because others have challenged how normal vs. unusual my outfit is.

Compared to other U.S. cities, I do think folks in NYC dress differently. One of the main differences is that “older” men in their 30’s through 50’s here continue to dress in designer clothing and follow fashion trends. I.e., dads look less obviously like dads. Plus, because of the wealth levels, folks can buy more of this stuff more often.
