How comfortable/well-made are Docs? They seem to be a forum favorite and I like the look of them, but from what I remember they kinda feel like they are made out of cardboard.

I want to give a big thanks to everybody who posts regularly on this thread. I don't post much myself, but I do lurk everyday and I think I've finally found an aesthetic for myself that looks pretty good but more importantly, I feel comfortable in. This thread was a major influence in bringing that about.

Glad I could help.

I think the made in England ones are better, but still not great. I don't have any, but I would like some.

The made in china docs are horrible imo, i never wear mine. The leather is like hard plastic, and the food bed has a very odd shape without any support what so ever.. Still, the mono docs looks really good...

I don't own any Chinese manufactured ones, but have a couple of pairs produced in Thailand and several made in Vietnam. The Vietnamese ones vary from plasticy to quite decent. I've only handled current Made in England ones, not worn them - the leather was still cheap corrected-grain, and I couldn't justify the huge price difference based for a minimal step up in quality. To be honest the Made in England ones I was buying in the late 80's weren't great quality either...

I like the style and the soles work well on icy pavements. There are certainly better quality boots out there though.

Doc Martens are comfortable and look good. Unfortunately the leather is low quality in these days.

I own a pair of Made in England Docs, bought in 2012. The quality of the leather is cheap. After two month of wear, it already started cracking. I still have a pair from the early 90’s that is in a better condition than the new ones. Even back then, the leather has never been nice or soft, but at least hard wearing. They were work boots after all.
