actually it isnt. rule 1 calories in < calories out = calories lost = weight lost rule 2 eat an adequate amount of protein (1 to 1.5g per lb body weight) every day to prevent muscle loss by the laws of thermodynamics if you follow those two rules you will lose weight. some methods are more efficient than others, but they all have to follow those 2 rules.
