Wow, another shocker. I think I paid $3K even (gray market) for my NIB sub date in 2001. LOL I may need to adjust my insurance coverages for these.

The sticker prices on Rolex have only been skyrocketing in recent years. In 1995 I bought a new Subdate from an AD with a discount for $2,500 (MSRP was $2,850). Then in 2001 I bought new Explorer 2 from an AD for $2,915 and its MSRP was $3,425. Then in 2005 I found a new Sub Date with green bezel for $4,500 and its MSRP was $4,850. Now these watches all have MSRPs of over $8,000 and discounts are much harder to come by. If you bought them when prices were good, hang on to them.

Check references, buy with a no-questions-asked 3 or 5-day return agreement so you can inspect it. Some guys selling watches there are grey market dealers who have been doing that for a decade, so they have a lot of references

the golden rule is to buy the seller and you should be fine.
On the rolex forums, DAVIDSW and Bodybump (Oscar) are my guys. They can probably get you a brand new Panerai with your name on it for a slight discount. Or they will have a LNIB for sale for a great price.

yeah, i paid 3850 for my SS DJ, its 6600 now.

Sorry to disappoint. I don't remember the prices I paid exactly - and I certainly don't remember what MSRP was 20 years ago, 10 years ago, etc...

thats ok. its easier when you only have a few watches, not purchased more than 8 or 9 years ago.

Sorry if this is inappropriate for this thread, but I'm contemplating on buying this submariner (serial A 1999) and two things strike me as peculiar a. the crown guards seem a bit farther from the crown than expected (at least from what I've seen in more recent numbers), and b. the "swiss made" on the dial, since my understanding is that it was introduced in the year 2000, before that it was just "swiss" or "swiss T 25".
What do the resident WISs think?

I would not hesitate on buying online. Just make sure you get a bunch of references. I have never had any issues with purchases on TZ, stitchy.

I have a great memory for numbers (be it watches or cars). I also save all the reciepts for every watch I've purchased. Although, recently I got rid of reciepts for watches I have since sold/traded.
