I had a chance to buy a 5070RG for 30K 5-6 yrs ago. Didn't really like the look. Stupid me. I really like this new chrono, and the mvmt fits the case! Wear in the best of health.

Good stuff Dino, congrats!! The first AP that i ever liked, it is surprising to see some brands that you have written 100% off actually makes something you like. Now i just need Panerai to do something remotely good and my watch perception is shattered.

My Dad bought the black dial YG 5070 when it was new in 1999. I thought he was a bit crazy as it cost him $27K and I thought he should have gotten a better discount, list was $28,800. That was back in the days when it was pretty easy to get Pateks from an AD at a 30% discount. Sadly those days are long gone. I guess he made the right decision after all.

Thanks Knisse. I have wanted an AP RO for some time as I liked the overall design, but I just wasn't in love with any of them. From the moment I saw photos I really liked it. When I saw it in person...I fell in love with it. I wasn't sure that a time only watch was really worth what the Jumbos go for, especially when their chronographs and other variations are around the same price (or less for a Dual Time or Day-Date calendar watch). But after a few days with it I can really see why it costs what it does and I am really thrilled with this watch.

As for Panerais, the design is so original and cool. My only problem with them is that many PAMs have really ordinary movements. A few years ago I found out their base Luminor was using a Unitas movement that was also powering my friend's $700 watch. When I learned that I was really disappointed with several of their offerings. Yes, I know they finish it to a higher level than in a $700 watch, but still disappointing IMHO.

Question? Why do people seem to want doubles, triples, etc, of the same or very similar watches? For example, some folks like to own Patek models in every gold and Pt. In my opinion, this creates a false market and makes it difficult for mere collectors to own even one of that model. Maybe it's jealousy, but I find this practice greedy. I mean, how many chronos of the same brand does one need. I've been guilty myself, to a quite small degree, but I like chronos and have owned VC's and Omega's versions, though the VC was dressy and the Omega Speedy was more of a sport piece.
    Thoughts?

I find that very gaudy. Sorry drizz.

But, ultimately if you like it, that's all that counts.

At one point I had 4 Rolex Daytonas at the same time (differnet dial colors, different case metals, but the same movement and all the same basic watch). At that point in my life it was my favorite watch and I liked having variations of it. Today I have a Daytona 16520 black dial (zenith based movement)and a 116520 black dial with the Rolex inhouse movement. They look similar but the movements, bracelets, and dials are different. When I had 4 essentially the same watch, it eventually got a bit boring.

I don't mind having a watch and its successor, but now I don't want a bunch of the same watch. I'm not sure I consider it greedy, afterall most Pateks and VCs are already pretty expensive to start with, so if they are within someone's budget, most likely the fact that one guy has 4 wasn't going to keep the next Patek collector from getting one. I also don't think that the fact that someone has 4 Pateks keeps a Patek out of the hands of someone that usually buys Rolex, IWC, or Breitling...particularly because the watches people tend to buy in the 4 metals tend to be the pricier complicated pieces rather than basic Calatravas.

If someone watches a Patek or VC in all the metals its available in, so be it. But I think I'd rather have a bit more variation and versatility in my collection.

I like the color blue of the dial on Drizz's watch, although it might look a bit better to me if it were a simpler dial like on the 10 day (rather than a chronograph). My big issue with Panerais is the use of very ordinary movements in many of their watches.

I guess it's just the collector mentality. I have many friends who collect wine and have X times as much as they can drink in several lifetimes. My point is why would you want 3-4 of the same watch, even if it's just a different color/gold. Variety is the spice. Then again if you like dating twins...

I honestly don't care about the movements overly much; I have a lot of watches with complicated movements (2 x Lange datograph perpetual, Portuguese minute repeater) and I'm primarily concerned with aesthetics and comfort.
