Great looking watch - I love how Rolex have gone back to the orange GMT hand. They only thing I don't approve of is the 42 mm case, which I think was a mistake.

+1 Agree with everything, especially regarding the case. Love the orange hand.

That is an awesome Datejust. Looks to be in great condition too. What generation is that? Did it come with a jubilee bracelet?

Well, just to pour oil on the fire:

There's no way in hell I'd buy a new Rolex today. The styling cues are exaggerated, in response to Omega and other brands coming out with retro homage designs, only some of which work. That and their lack of innovation and virtuoso-level craftsmanship in the movement department pretty much makes them the stretch humvee limo of watch brands. They are incredibly overpriced for what goes into them. I dare say anyone who owns a Rolex made after 1980 and paid for it themselves as new is a complete fool. I know this as I happen to be in that category. I sold my Sea Dweller recently, but not before considering having a vintage dial put on it - it was then I realized that I didn't really like the look or feel of the watch.

If you want to pay big bux for fine craftsmanship there's JLC, Patek, the IWC Portuguese, etc. That said I'm happy with my Sinns and Seikos.

As for the styling of the Grand Seiko watches they are probably a concession to "Kaicho/Oyaji" sensibilities and since most of the people buying GS's are Kaichos that will likely not change. Too bad.

That said the retro fad is producing some really neat watches in Japan. I have one of these on the way:

Part of Seiko's perceived image is that it is a cheap brand because they market a range of prices. Seiko has also been more popular in the SE part of the world and the residents there are more familiar with the nuances of the brand, in general.

you guys wearing your watches on the outside of your cuffs look like doofuses. That is all.

p.s. that new Explorer II's markers are noticeably too big and it has too many colors, it's too post-2000 pornographic looking for such a 70's retro base.

In what way? The last NSX compares very favorably to the 996 non-turbos, the only thing it doesn't have point for point, model year on model year is the Porsche brand cachet - though, in the realm of all the cars one could buy in the world, a 996 Porsche does not rank highly in prestige and the brand cachet does not rub off on it favorabiy (944 much?) anyway, much like most Rolexes.

branch cachet is apparently very important to the overwhelming majority in the world...
here are the sales figures for the NSX sold in the USA

    United States:
    1990 1119
    1991 1940
    1992 1154
    1993 652
    1994 533
    1995 884
    1996 460
    1997 415
    1998 303
    1999 238
    2000 221
    2001 182

    ...
dwindling numbers after the first 3 years. why? because no brand cachet. no one is going to pay for a $90-100k mid-engine honda, no matter what kind of ferrari killer it is. yeah, in the first 3 years, it was cool, but when people realized that they just spent a fortune to get a honda, reality probably set in.
you can beat a ferrari or a lambo or a porsche in a honda, but in the end of the day, the people who have those exotic samples are still going home with their ferraris and lambos.
most people who buy ferraris and porsches want performance, yes, but they also want that special feeling when the general public see them in their ferraris and porsches. "like woah, that guy is in a ferrari, he must be successful" that special feeling cannot be delivered by the nsx, because it is a honda.
you can say 944 (porsche/vw venture) all you want, but whats the first car people buy or think about buying when they have their mid-life crisis? a porsche, not a honda.
whats the first thing people think when you drive by in a porsche? successful business man?
whats the first thing people think when you drive by in a nsx? :plain:
samething with the rolex vs grand seiko comparison, when you graduate med/law school or whatever, whats the watch you most likely will buy? a rolex (public perception)
whats the first watch most IBD analysts get when they make it to 2nd year? rolex?

whether you spend $7000 on a watch, or $100k on a car, you are already lightening your wallet on a veblen good, so why not make it a real veblen good?
and that is what most people do, they buy the rolex or the porsche. and that is what sales figures tell us to be true.

i am only commenting on the public perception of those items and brands, not commenting on the WIS and car enthusiast's perception.

An NSX seems rather a ostentatious piece of machinery to compare wth a GS.

Which Daytona do you have. I am debating between a pre owned black face with the zenith movement, or to really go classic and a get a the older 1970's style. Obviously there is a significant price difference between the two.

:nodding: The Zenith El Primero is a robust movement.

I have a white faced with in-house movement. A friend has a vintage Daytona, and it's really spectacular. I'd like to own one, but I don't lust after it enough to justify the cost. Maybe one day when I'm not such a peasant :)

I think I've finally decided on the Portuguese Perpetual. Now I just need to make up my mind between rose gold with white dial, or white gold with the ardoise.
