This is probably a silly question, but how do dials actually age and develop a patina, given that they are always protected/enclosed? I understand how the lume changes colors, but what about older dials that have chipping or streaking to the letters or numbers, scratches, other marks, etc.?

Exposure to light/sun affects the properties of the paint, lume (especially tritium). Big changes in temperature can also contribute to paint/dial wear. Scratches are likely due to services and careless handling of the dial outside of the case. Note that often tiny hairline scratches on the crystal can give the impression of scratches on the dial.

Looking forward to seeing it. I'm thinking of picking one up at some point. Which model did you get?

Marine Original w/Roman Numerals. I think it looks much classier than the regular Marine Original which I saw in person and thought looked almost too white and painted on.

My new Stowa. Putting a pic on a forum is new to me - can someone tell me how to get a bigger pic in a post rather than a thumbnail? (

OK, I think I worked out how to post a proper pic rather than just a thumbnail. Stowa Marine Auto, not an expensive watch but I like it a lot:
