1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Nick is a great guy, and I was just telling him yesterday about how much I enjoyed his post about William Gibson.

@Belligero - you're telling me you didn't enjoy Jack's piece about the Nautilus pen?

Speaking of Nautilii, this just landed on my wrist 15 minutes ago while walking around Fifth Avenue (the dragonfly, not the watch):

Ha. There are two watches on my wish list, and that Vacheron, even in a normal white gold and white dial, is one of them.

I wish I still had that photo of the magpie on my arm pecking at my Rolex in the early 2000s (a Rolex which I only had briefly and had to sell...broke my heart). Good photo, though, but I think it's lost :(

Nicely put! I started to read hi-fi magazines a few years ago, but quickly started to hate the writing. It was exactly as you put it.

Most 'reviews' are often verbatim from press releases. Hard to find anything genuinely critical these days outside of the arts. And restaurants.

True. Some design literacy would be nice, though.

Regrets; I didn’t find it to be particularly well-written. It often seems as though he’s trying to beat a personal record for the most parenthetical phrases within a single sentence, which gets tiresome.

    This example is especially clumsy:

“The engineering for the Nautilus was handled by Pilot of Japan – to expose the nib, you gently twist the body of the pen, which rotates around a barely-there seam set slightly back from the midpoint of the pen (if you actually measure the pen – I did, once a nerd, always a nerd – and do the math you find out that the length of the longer and shorter body segments is pretty close to the famous Golden Ratio; I don't know if Newson did it on purpose or if it's just the natural consequence of a trained eye seeking natural harmony, but it's a fun piece of cocktail conversation if nothing else).”

He seems pleasant enough, but it’s a bit lame to call out the watch press for being “toothless” and then mass-produce what’s essentially ad copy. On the other hand, the style is probably spot-on for a pen-measuring club.

    :p
