Given what Omega's said about his kid, I'd recommend something with a reputation for indestructiblity, say a Seiko Sumo, and I'd recommend buying 2, so he can quickly replace the first after it's inevitably lost/smashed/traded for video games.

Used classic Santos would be my pick for college watch, but not sure if that still meets the price tag or works as well in a more American campus. If the need for automatic is relaxed, a Seiko perpetual calendar GMT in titanium like sbqj015.
