People say the Nautilus and Royal Oak are ugly. Both are polarizing designs and clearly not for everyone. However, the Aquanaut does absolutely nothing for me even with an automatic movement. There isn't anything I like about it other than the movement is nice. Take out the automatic movement, put in a quartz movement and it has no redeeming features to my eye.

I thought the same way about the Aquanaut until I tried one on (as true with the Nautilus). The key things are the thinness and the case finishing. When considering the water resistance achieved, it’s quite something. Also, the potentially military origins are cool.

Approved by Cartier! Got everything I asked for, except that the cabochon must be a ruby.

So now we are discussing options for the hands. I’m pretty sure I want them to be dark grey or black instead of blue, but if they can use blackened gold instead of galvanizing steel, I’d be 100% sold.

The old Aquanauts with the super deep gillochet grenade dial are pretty badass. There’s something very charming about the “entry level” Patek finishing. Too bad values have skyrocketed.

Agreed. It’s awesome as a throw-around beater that is still an awesome, enviable, highly pedigreed watch underneath. Not so awesome when it’s selling for three or four times retail and you could get a manual chronograph or perpetual calendar in precious metal for the same price …

Indeed it’s the “Rolex of Pateks”.

I don’t think I could pick one instead of a 5025 though.

I think the Tank Must is getting a pass because the solar aspect of it is seen as a “complication” and therefore it is more interesting than a Timex quartz movement.

Personally, if I’m paying more than 1-2k$ for a watch I want to see a smooth sweeping seconds hand.
Or none at all. A good way to disguise quartz is to do without.
Those up-and-coming I-bankers could slide by with a Frederique Constant classic dial, with nary a click to remind them that they're not winding it by hand.

That's cool. Did they say how long it would be?
