And maybe consider a Sinn?

Anything with sword hands is a winner in my book.

If I wanted a beater-ish dive watch I would actually consider this fairly seriously:

I like and respect JLC ... but I find some of their designs are so sterile looking ...

I get that. In terms of the exterior design aesthetics the JLC Master series strikes me as sharp and hard-edged. In contrast my PP dress watches are soft and fanciful ... downright romantic.

I once talked about how I wear Huntsman and Richard Anderson for work and Anderson & Sheppard for dinner parties and evenings out. I treat watches similarly ... and at times the architect in me craves that clinical crispness. Although late in my career I produced very traditional residences that played on the Arts & Crafts movement ... in my early days I spent time with a NY firm that had been described by Tom Wolfe as creating houses with all the charm of an insecticide factory. I'm sure a shrink could have a field day with that range.

Your suit analogy is an great way to describe your choice of watches . It certainly makes sense. There are certainly are a few pieces in the Master collection that speak to me and I could wear and enjoy owning (Geographic, Hometime, and some Master Antoines). Still, I'm more drawn to the Reversos, which are a completely different style. I guess my taste in dress watches tends to be something a bit more romantic or whimsical. So in the past I was more interested in pieces from VC. In addition, the few dress watches I have are not round. I have several round steel sports watches that get lots of wear. However if I'm going to dress up or go out for a nice dinner, I like something that is totally different, in terms of color and shape so they are gold and not round. Sort of like going from wearing sneakers on weekends to putting on a pair of EGs for dinner or an evening out. Certainly not everyone's taste, but they speak to me...and a Reverso is more akin to them than most Master Series pieces, so that may be why it is a piece I'm most likely to add from JLC at some point.

I am not even necessarily sure that I want a diver. I am really craving something with water resistance, that is fun. My rotation right now is the MUT Moon, which is not fun, and the Speedmaster, which I love but is also not that fun.
You want something fun? Check out the Gorilla Outlaw Drift. Yes, the name is horrible and the design is not everyone's cup of tea. But I kind of like it.

So you were a stormtrooper in Le Corbusier Wehrmacht. Tsk, tsk.
