Some of it may speak to the quality of lack thereof, but also what I find disturbing is the customer service - lack of contact/lack of follow up - essentially leaving the owner in the dark. Any watch (or other product) can have a problem/and or need a repair, but it is how the company handles it, and how good their repair department is at dealing with it that helps me determine if I would ever buy another product from them.
Ironically, I was in Tourneau two weeks ago to look at another watch, and the sales rep recommended I look at Nomos -- you can imagine what I said! Interestingly, what most disturbed her, too, as your point, that their lack of a response to my concerns was the most serious issue. She was actually filing a complaint with them for me, which I appreciated, but I don't expect anything to come of it.

All good points. Here's a valid question: Has COVID diminished the need for a dress watch? I haven't been to a wedding in over a year. My tux is collecting dust. When I go to court, I do it by Zoom. Do we need dress watches anymore?

If we're being honest, it's been at least a decade since people have "needed" a dress watch. Standards are such that most typical sport watches on a bracelet will work perfectly fine in the vast majority of "dressy" occasions. For the vast majority of situations where say a speedy won't work, you probably don't need a watch at all. For genuinely formal occasions, there is no need to wear any watch - unless you are working an event you probably don't need to know time with any level of precision, if at all. A lot of the "rules" around wristwatches are incredibly outdated, even more so today when the Apple watch is the best-selling watch year after year.

Of course, there are certain professions where it may make more sense to wear a dress watch more regularly. If you are an attorney who appears in court regularly or a professional who wears a suit, a dress watch may make sense. I doubt anyone would care if you wore a casual watch, as I'm sure most people even in those situations do, but it's obviously easier to justify a dress watch that you will have a genuine use for with some regularity. For just about everyone else, a dress watch is a superfluous.

For enthusiasts it still may make perfect sense to have a dress watch, but it's not based on necessity any more than any of the other rules of thumb that enthusiasts like to have. We are talking about self-imposed rules, not any sort of objective truth. So I guess it's whatever we need to justify our consumption habits to ourselves.

If I were to cut down to 3 watches (excluding the fitness watch that is the bane of my watch collection but the only watch I wear these days), it would be my Nomos Tangomat GMT, Speedy and one of my g-shocks. Beyond that I would probably go with my BLNR and Explorer 1, perhaps not in that order. It's all a bit arbitrary of course but I would say that the Speedy, BLNR and Exp all fit the same general niche for me. The Nomos is as dressy a watch as I'd ever need. One of these days my mente will let me put down my Fitbit and return to mechanical timepieces (most likely when I can replace the fitness functionality with some other device) but for now I'm perfectly happy to have a number of unnecessary pieces in my stable which are rarely worn, if not uncherished.

Given that you seem to enjoy all of your pieces and money isn't the real problem, have you considered just having a rotation of 3 watches at any given time and putting the rest in storage (whether it's in a safe in your home or in a safe deposit box). Every few months you can swap out your gang of 3 for another grouping and satisfy your itch to change things up. I think we all know where this is going and it's not going to end up with @George Red owning and wearing the same 3 watches for the next decade. Embrace your preferences, there's nothing wrong with having more watches than you need. As long as it's not causing you financial or other distress, of course.

Thanks for all the replies......I'm not surprised at the feedback tbh. However, moving the TAG is dependent on my next purchase (SS Daytona), in which case the FOIS would go as well since I don't need 2 chronos. However, if I get a 36MM DD then I have some other decisions to make........**** never ends

I am an attorney who appears in court once or twice a year. I often wear a Blancpain Aqualung with my suit and have never felt underdressed. It's not like the judge is going to be able to see what is hiding underneath my shirt cuff. So I don't think anyone needs a dress watch. It's all about wants.

My dream three-watch collection (assuming that I have access to a good watchmaker and my vintage watches are in original and good condition when I receive them):

Universal Geneve Tri-Compax "Evil Clapton"
Rolex Explorer II, Reference 1655
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra-Thin

Actually, the only times I've noticed judges wearing interesting watches, both were on the bench and one was wearing a 16610LV Green/Kermit Submariner, and another time a judge was wearing a Panerai.

Much the same for me- I've only noticed two judges wearing interesting watches, a guy wearing a Panerai and a woman wearing a rose gold Rolex.

Are we just picking out of your collection? If so, I'd go Reverso, Rolex GMT and Daytona
@George Red Out of what I've seen you post here, I'd go with Speedy, Pepsi, and Reverso. Based on the statements you've made in the past about how much you love the Speedy, I think this is really more of a question of: "What two watches would best complement my Speedy in a 3-watch collection?"
I would pick the (non-ceramic) Daytona over the Speedy, if only because the Daytona will be much more difficult to buy later at a reasonable price. You can always buy a Speedy.

Counterpoint to that is that currently the Daytona market is ridiculous. You could always cash in on the hot market and then pick one up again at a later time if you really wanted another Daytona. Of course who knows where they'll be in the next few years and they could inexplicably continue to increase in value even in the face of an increasingly more interesting chrono market (new zeniths, jlc, speedy, etc)
