Great discussion about SIHH. This is such a great thread. I am a big watch fan, but I cannot think of any releases in the last several years that attract me. I think simple dress watches should be 36mm or less. The new 36mm VC American is a great example of the right size. The original 40mm looks oversized on every wrist or wrist shot I have seen. Another example, the Patek 5196 proportions are all wrong compared to the discontinued 3796 at 31mm (which is not a feminine size contrary to popular opinion). And the 5196 is considered small. The VC Patrimony at 40mm is even more extreme. I also think sport watches should be no bigger than 42mm (Panerai excepted based on history and perhaps a few other historical exceptions). Cartier peaked with the CPCP line and has put out mostly unwearable watches since (mostly due to huge sizes; the dials are also too busy for the brand's aesthetic). ALS is a also mess with its random modern/novel complications and antique designs and ever increasing sizes (both width and height). Patek puts out mostly lesser appealing and bigger reissues of its classics (e.g. 5140 v. 3940; arguably even 5070 v. 5170). AP hasn't improved on the original RO in 40+ years and makes essentially nothing but derivatives of the same. Same with GP--pretty much a mess. Maybe this is a result of the proliferation of watch blogs causing brands to feel the need to constantly change and "innovate". It seems in my opinion that watch design went off the rails in the mid-2000s.
