Would also be interested in a nice nautilus... any suggestions?
Have you made lots of purchases from your local Patek dealer? If not, you'll probably have to name your first born after the owner of the shop, sign a contract offering him a kidney transplant if he ever needs one, and perform sexual acts for him at your local waffle house and even then he probably won't guarantee you a Nautilus. :rotflmao: Or you can just overpay for one at a pre-owned shop. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Wow, adding a speedy is on my wishlist, but this might just be a bit out of my price range.

Changing topics. Thoughts appreciated.

Currently wearing a sub 14060 as my daily. Pic below.

View attachment 2311687

I’ve also got a 44mm planet ocean and a Sinn 856UTC (need serviced) thinking of selling these two to get a nicer dress watch to compliment the sub, as they rarely if ever get worn.

The PO sometimes comes out in the summer with casual outfits as it wears really big, (I wish it was the 42mm version) so it’s fine with a short sleeve camp shirt, it not my favorite with anything long sleeve.

The Sinn might be harder to get rid of for sentimental reasons, as it was my daily when I was in Iraq, and Afghanistan. But again, today, now that I wear the sub, and the need for service, it just doesn’t get worn.
My two cents for what their worth.
Keep the Sinn. It has sentimental value but probably very little actual sale value. Do you have children? Put off the service for now but this would be a great gift for a son ( or daughter) when they turn 13 or 16 or graduate high school. Old enough to have a quality heirloom watch but young enough to wear it while you still see them. The Rolex IMO is not a gift until they get older. I would see what you can get for the PO. Might also have value for a trade.
Now, take some time and decide what kind of watch person you think you will be moving forward. Many would say that that Rolex is the perfect one watch. Certainly it could be a great one watch for most. Do you think you will start a collection? If not, then will a second, or maybe three be enough. This is is easy hobby to fall quickly down the rabbit hole, especially if you make a good living.
If you decide on a second watch then spend as much time as possible doing your research and trying on as many watches as possible. I can tell you I wasted some money before I figured out what size watch I was comfortable with. For me 40 mm, give or take and 11 mm thick give or take is my sweet spot on my 7 1/4 inch wrist. I also know that no matter how much I like the look of NATO's, for me the metal band feels the most comfortable.
As for a true dress watch, only you know your lifestyle. For most, having a thinner, dressier watch is often a waste of money in today's casual world. But if you regularly wear suits, go to events, etc. Then this may make sense for you. Personally, I would lean towards a second watch that complements the Rolex but is still casual enough to wear down. As you have already mentioned it I would opine a speed master is just about perfect. But only if you feel it would get at least some wrist time. At that point, a third dressier watch would seem to fill out the collection. Going old school pie pan omega would make that purchase much more reasonable. Of course there are a lot of great options out there in the below or at 5k budget new.
Good luck and keep us in the loop.

Many helpful thoughts here. Thanks.

There’s a lot to unpack here. Let me try to break it down.

Keep the Sinn. It has sentimental value but probably very little actual sale value.

Yes, as others have said, the sentimental value likely far exceeds any trade or resale value

Do you have children? Put off the service for now but this would be a great gift for a son ( or daughter) when they turn 13 or 16 or graduate high school. Old enough to have a quality heirloom watch but young enough to wear it while you still see them.

Good advice on the service. (Although my OCD hates having a watch that doesn’t keep time sitting in a drawer)

I do, three, two boys and a girl.

Tough to decide who might get it. But worth thinking about.

The Rolex IMO is not a gift until they get older.

Concur.

I would see what you can get for the PO. Might also have value for a trade.

Yes. Concur.

Many would say that that Rolex is the perfect one watch. Certainly it could be a great one watch for most.

It has been my main watch worn daily since I got it, so yes, as far as a collection goes, I could easily get rid of everything (besides the PO and Sinn, I have a Marathon and a seiko diver) and be happy.

Do you think you will start a collection? If not, then will a second, or maybe three be enough. This is is easy hobby to fall quickly down the rabbit hole, especially if you make a good living.

See above, I’ve been buying/selling/ trading for a while. My biggest regret was selling my blue face Aqua Terra.

I hear this. I think I have a decent idea what size I like (see comments about the 44mm PO)

As for a true dress watch, only you know your lifestyle. For most, having a thinner, dressier watch is often a waste of money in today's casual world. But if you regularly wear suits, go to events, etc. Then this may make sense for you.

I work in an environment where a jacket (suit or sport coat) is worn generally four times a week, with some dressier occasions. So a watch slightly more dressy than the sub will get worn.

Personally, I would lean towards a second watch that complements the Rolex but is still casual enough to wear down.

Yes, when I say “dress watch” I’m thinking something that is versatile, and just slightly dressier than the sub. I’m not looking for the thinned/dressiest watch out there.

As you have already mentioned it I would opine a speed master is just about perfect. But only if you feel it would get at least some wrist time. Curious your thoughts on a short list of dressy (ish) under 5K watches?

I think a second watch for dressier occasions first. Then a speedy and call the “collection” finished.

As I said before, I’ve had several watches over the years. Got the sub when I retired from the army in 2018 and have been gernally happy with just the sub (PO and Sinn plus others just sit in a drawer) since then. So I don’t think I’ll “get the bug” again and go years and years, buying/selling/trading. Plus as you said above, I’m older now and have a much better idea what I like and what I’ll wear.

Good luck and keep us in the loop.

I “see” what you did there 😜 and will do.

Clearly you need a three watch collection.

My 36mm Explorer will go to my beloved wife so she will be forced to endure nothing but lights off missionary once I am departed.

SD, GMT, Explorer II, Speedy Pro and my Dad's vintage Omega will go to my daughter who at 17 is likely to prove more responsible than her older brother for at least another 10 years. By then he'll be about 30 and she can decide what to share with him.

Dress Watches are for people with more than one timepiece ;)
incorrect. my 5196 is my only watch
...until i get the 5296.
5196 for the first born, 5296 for the second born. two boys. easy peasy. and then i get to upgrade:
5196 --> 3940
5296 --> 3800

If you are in a jacket 4 times a week, something dressier than the sub is a great recommendation. I would just add that it does not have to be a dress watch and something fairly thin that fits under a cuff easily with a nice leather or shell strap can be a great addition to your collection. When I was in a jacket every day, I wore something like this most days. Some options that always seem to be on my short list if I'm ever again in a jacket multiple days every week - Nomos, Cartier, Grand Seiko, Glashutte Original, . . . I always think I like IWC until I try it on.

Good luck with your search. And will echo everyone to sell the PO or pick up one of the older 42 mm models.

Is the 2024 Speedmaster FOIS a boutique exclusive? The vintage lume is less bothersome than I originally thought.

I loved the size of the CK2998 I had for a while but found the silver hands and white dial a bad combo.

Will be in Manhattan next week so I figure I can see one in person pretty easily.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
