The Cubitus is the horological equivalent of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. A lazy copy of the iconic original that will nevertheless make a lot of money and make the fans happy.

"For Warhol, Piaget was a perfect fit. At that time, Piaget was the height of cool — with novel, chic designs that perfectly encapsulated the excitement and opulence of the new money and the jet set. it was a brand worn by everyone from Elvis to Jackie Kennedy. Warhol, of course, was famously obsessed with cultural capital, fame and popular culture — so Piaget was the perfect fit."

Stupid reason to call it Warhol. First, Piaget's current philosophy has nothing to do with Warhol's output. Second, the very reasons they state as Warhol's preference for the watch no longer apply. For better or worse today's jet set (if there even is such a thing given the ubiquity of cheap luxury travel and the decentralisation of mass culture) is probably flying in tracksuits wearing a Richard Mille or Garmin/Apple. The only black tie wearers are insurance agents in polyester rentals at their company's annual award dinner. Third, the watch's design, in 2024, is monotonous, retro, and might at best appeal to a lawyer's wife, so the design itself is also not a "perfect fit".

FWIW-King Flum roasted him a bit about this and the author came back with a response:

"I do think that, in general, a square watch (and in the present case a square watch with cut corners) is more original than a rounded watch, simply because there are far more rounded/circular watches on the market than square/rectangular watches. The meaning of the word original here refers to the concept of “being different from the majority” and should not be read in the other sense of the word (to be referred to as “the first one” or the “one that was there at the begenning”) – which as a French person writting this article might sound logical, maybe less for a native English speaker as you… But I have written in the article that the Cubitus certainly was derived from the Nautilus (more than once in this article BTW) – the word original should be read as “unconventional” and surely not as “authentic” or “initial”"

The fallacy here is assuming that the Nautilus is a "mere" round watch and conveniently ignoring the novelty of the porthole design. In that regard, it's far more unconventional than the Cubitus, which, rather than successfully jumping onto the shaped watches trend spearheaded by Cartier, simply looks like a square Nautilus.

Being in the minority has nothing to do with originality. That was a weak-ass response.

Makes sense since both provocations arise from the same root cause, namely, valorizing poor aesthetic choices based on brand eminence.
I tried my hand at a jazz jam recently. Had similar thoughts. Possibly so did the band and audience.
