It all started when they tried to sell an alarm clock for like $5k.
You probably aren't that far off. That must have been peak Ben Clymer. Rubbing shoulders with rock stars, touring Rolex and Patek, collecting vintage 911's. It would probably go to my head too.

I remember seeing that clock and thinking I'd love to have a mechanical clock with an 8 days power reserve on my desk.

Then I saw this!!

A few years ago I ordered some straps from Hodinkee. One of the straps arrived with a 18mm long end and a 20mm short end. The other seemed fine, but quickly ripped where the spring bar resides. I tried contacting Hodinkee for MONTHS about getting both (or even one) replaced or refunded. Nothing. They just never replied. Awful.

I don't understand what there is to buy of Crown & Calibre? They scuttled the staff a long time ago and most if not all of the inventory. It can't be much more than buying the name and website.

I had a similar light bulb moment and that is why I now own the 3940 and do not own watches like the 5205 or the 5212. It is just a better watch in all respects.

Patek is just a different brand in its current iteration. Honestly, I think what Patek does best nowadays is watches like the 5164G. That watch has a nifty complication, it is a nice mix of dress and sport, has a fun color, etc. I cannot think of a single watch in the Patek catalogue that was not better at some point in the past.
Respectfully, you sound like a hypocrite. You have waxed lyrically about some of these models and other recent ones that you considered purchasing. It is fine if your tastes have changed. But it’s a bit rich to suddenly have a complete about face. Perhaps this is related to your many lamentations about the impending demise of your AD relationship.

How Do You Feel About Pleated Trousers?

  • Love them, classic!

  • Occasionally, depending on the outfit

  • Prefer flat-front

  • Never wear them
