Annual end-of-summer beach house week. Put the Seamaster on rubber. Brought the G-Shock for golf. Left the Rolexes at home.

Happy to see that our favorite beach survived Debby.

My friend managed to pick up a Simon Brette piece. Seeing it on Tues. Pretty excited.

I cannot think of a single watch that I feel more conflicted about.

On the one hand: the finishing is exquisite, perhaps the number 1; I think the aesthetics are cool enough, and the size and all that is great; and the opening price of 50,000 CHF was absolutely bonkers.

One the other hand: while this was a lovely first piece, I have little to no understanding of the overall perspective or vision of the brand. SJX made a comment that I agree with:

Another predictable prize was the Simon Brette Chronomètre Artisans in the Horological Revelation category. The watch was one of the most talked about launches of the year so the prize was almost a given, though it does not appeal to me personally. While the tangible quality of the watch is impressive, the concept feels too contrived in how it combines everything that the market currently wants, rather than an original artisanal vision, resulting in something that lacks soul in my opinion.

To me, it feels less like an original thought from SB and more of an amalgamation of nice finishing techniques. And at least for me, the parts are either worth more than, or the same as, the sum. I think it will be important to see his second watch to get a more complete picture of SB's perspective.

All that said, if I got an allocation of the new RG iteration with a black dial (coming end of 2025), I'd be seriously inclined to jump on it because THAT could be lovely.

Waffle House? Counter doesn't look sticky enough.

haha close enough. It’s a 24/7 diner here.

Agreed on all counts. At the price point they went for originally though it’s a no brainer.

I also get not finding your unique identity as a brand right away. For the consumer brands I started, it always took us a few years and I feel it’s still hard to do without experimenting a little first. It takes time to learn why people appreciate your brand and how to zero in on them, etc

Overall just excited to see the finish quality. Same friend has a Kari too.
