Even with the titanium bridges and plates in the movement, that price is excessive.
It's cool. It's WAY too expensive. Suspect this is a conversation starter/brand builder for Omega rather than any serious attempt to move metal?Even with the titanium bridges and plates in the movement, that price is excessive.
Definitely more a halo product to show they can do it, but that price...that's on par with the Canopus Speedmaster which is all white gold. It's cool. It's WAY too expensive. Suspect this is a conversation starter/brand builder for Omega rather than any serious attempt to move metal?
Do all watches just look better without a date?
Yes. Compare the Rolex Sub to the Sub dateDo all watches just look better without a date?
Looks like a Hamilton Murph
What are your thoughts on that salmon PP5172g? I think that it is different enough from my PP5170g (black dial) to merit consideration. So I saw the new titanium Yachtmaster a few weeks ago. I met up with some watch collector friends for brunch and to visit some watch shops. Funny thing is we all arrived at lunch wearing some form of GMT Master II (it wasn't planned).
Lobster Benedict for brunch.
Then we visited the local Rolex boutique, and tried on a few watches.
One friend is interested in a DD, so we tried this on, but I think he might be more interested in a 36 mm with stone dial of some sort.
We tried on the new steel GMT with black and gray bezel. Nice, but I like the Pepsi, Sprite and Batman far more.
We also tried on the all gold GMT. It's nice, but I prefer the rose gold version's bezel colors and oyster bracelet.
Would be perfect on an all gold bracelet. I don't like the oysterflex, or the fact that you can't add a bracelet to it.
The Titanium Yachtmaster was very cool. It's not a revolutionary watch. However, as we all know Rolex is generally about evolution. Their use of titanium really transformed the watch, and their finish on it was very cool. I've never seen a titanium watch finished like this before. It was interesting to hold this watch, which is 42 mm next to my 40mm steel GMTII and feel how much lighter it felt. The matte black dial complimented the dark gray color and finish of the titanium, and I like that they kept the writing and hands white. No unnecessary use of color, just clean and understated.
This is the only Yachtmaster I'd ever buy. This one they got everything right. I've never loved any of the other variations. To me the name sounded pretentious, and in the past it was basically a gussied up Sub with less water resistance. I never liked the original all gold model or the steel one with platinum dial and red seconds hand. The blue dial is better, but the red seconds hand and writing looks a bit gimmicky. The steel with gray dial is bland, and again just a sort of detuned Submariner with contrasting colored seconds hand/writing.
To me the titanium Yachtmaster is really cool looking, and the finish and feel are wonderful. If they offered a 41mm Sub or a 40 MM GMT version, those would be the only thing that in my opinion could top this model. Sadly, unless those are released, I think the Ti Yachtmaster will be another watch that remains in short supply, and which boutiques and ADs will hold in their safe and offer it only to clients with huge spending histories or client who are willing visit a Waffle House to get a watch they really want. Perhaps they should call it the "Waffle House Master?" That has a nice ring to it.
We were also walking past the Patek Boutique, when a sales person we have all purchased from before, saw us and invited us in to see their new store. We had previous chatted about visiting, but had heard you need an appointment, especially on a weekend. So it was nice that our old sales associate saw us and invited us to visit. It was my first visit and it was really a beautiful shop.
She brought out some great items for us to play with, but my favorite was the 5712. The 5712 on a bracelet is my favorite modern Patek. Overall, a fun day with my friends and some great sales associates who I enjoy visiting.
Looks like you are watching the next President and VP of the USA. (Too political?).
It's not a watch that I liked in photos, as I'm generally not a fan of salmon dials or syringe hands, and I wasn't sure about the lugs. However, in person it really works together very nicely. I think there are so many details that are different enough from your 5170g that you could own it without it feeling duplicative, although both are 2 register chronographs. My favorite modern Patek is still the 5712 in steel or rose gold on matching bracelet, but I did enjoy wearing the 5172g. You should definitely try one on and see if it makes you smile enough to pull the trigger on one. Wishing you lots of luck and fun with your decision! What are your thoughts on that salmon PP5172g? Looks-wise, looks like a $100 watch to me.
The weird thing is it's not even all that light. I think my old Zenith Shadow weighed 12g more with a regular old El Primero movement inside. It's cool. It's WAY too expensive. Suspect this is a conversation starter/brand builder for Omega rather than any serious attempt to move metal?
Knowing Gov. Walz, it's probably a Casio, Tissot, or something under $1,000. Not exactly a luxury goods kind of guy.
