At least the DSOTM that Lyles wore is fairly light being a ceramic case with a strap. It's not like he wore an all platinum watch with platinum bracelet.

Hello watch lovers,

a question regarding smart watches: Do these high-end, high-quality watch makers like Rolex or Philipp Patike (or so) actually produce smart watches? I am wearing out of convenience a Samsung Galaxy 3 smart watch that tracks my sports training (cycling, running, workouts, steps per day, kilometers cycled per day) and has easily exchangeable wrist bands in silicon, for sports when sweating, and brown and black leather when worn with my suit in office.

I track my physical activities with the smart watch daily 24h as it is synchronized with the health and fitness app of my public healt insurance here in Germany, the "Techniker Krankenkasse" (= "Technicans' health insurance").

I have not seen any smart watch from the luxury watch makers you present here.

Best regards

Pascal
The short answer is they don't make smart watches. Most high end watches are mechanical, not quartz watches (with a few exceptions) and none need to be charged or synched. High end watches are really more of an artform than cutting edge, much in the way that you can get a suit that is all machine made, perfectly uniform stitching, fused, and stain resistant material probably for a few hundred dollars, but most high end suits whether off the rack, MTM, or custom will be hand made on some level, may offer some level of customization, and costs thousands of dollars. Yes, there are exceptions to what I wrote, but that's sort of the basics.

I recently saw (somewhere) a kit to disguise your smart watch in a (fake) Richard Mille.

For example (but there are others) Steven Mille 🤣

This is why.

There's a reason why electronics don't mix with luxury.

Thanks for the information,

the problem is the planned obsolence of the software suit and systems software after a couple of years. The funny thing is, that "real" smart sport watches from Garmin or Polar are not meant to become obsolete, because if I am not mistaken the operating system software is the same, proprietary to Garmin or Polar, and contiuously updated. The operating systems of Samsung, using Androide, and Apple, with its own, become obsolete after a few years and updates are not possible.

The most expensive smart sport watch, the Garmin Fenix 8X, costs 1100€. It comes of course with leather and metal wrist bands to be worn as a regular wrist watch when not doing sports our outdoor adventures.

I understand that real luxury watches must be timeless, not becoming obsolete by planning by the manufacturer, and thus need to be mechanical without a proprietory software.

Unfortunately these luxury watches can show you only the time and date, and not the GPS guidance for a winter trail-run throught the Alps or your sleeping pattern synchronized with your health app ;-).

Best regards

Pretty amazing that Lyles won while wearing a watch. You would think that 100m runners would wear as little extraneous things as possible. Rafael Nadal wears his signature Richard Mille on his right wrist while playing tennis, but that's a whole different matter.
Nelly Korda also wears a Richard Mille while playing golf. She'll be out there starting tomorrow for the U.S.

It's not even planned obsolence. EU is banning sales of all electronic devices that are not using USB-C for charging in 2025.

GPS can be phased out, jammed or spoofed (it is already happening) or gets nuked by Russia.

Technology changes every 6 months, but mechanical watches live forever.
