OK, I've had it with the vest.

I bought a couple of three-piece suits last year, thinking that I was so retro, wearing old-fashioned fuddy-duddy clothes which, naturally, would make for a wonderful ironic contrast with my generally youthful appearance.

And now the vest is everywhere. Thanks to our friends in the mass retail industry, it is being worn in countless "business upstairs, party downstairs" outfits, over formal shirts with ties and inevitably paired with jeans, with nary a matching jacket or formal pants in sight. Or, even worse, if that is possible, over pop-collar polos or t-shirts.

As the vest has become The Casual Fashion Accessory of the Month, it is with some sadness that I retire my vests, and impress my three-piece suits into two-piece service, at least until the vest goes out of fashion, which I am hoping will occur sometime later this year.

You're thinking too hard about this.

You must've hated it when the blazer + jean combo made its resurgence.

I don't so, a suit vest should not be worn as casual attaire and but wearing them properly with your suits you are reminding people of that. Plus I think it's a crime of fashion to dismember a suit of one of it's peices.

Yeah, that's on my list as well. Overall, I'm tired of the madcap mixing of formal and casual pieces of clothing; it was clever when it first showed up a few years ago, but by now it's just tired.

Speaking of the casual-formal mix, it can only be a matter of time before the tuxedo t-shirt makes its reappearance.

A three piece suit is a suit. All suits should be three piece imo, just like people wore 70+ years ago. It just feels so much more comfortable and looks cooler. Plus you dont have to worry about tie length as much, lol.

+1,000,000,000. Vested suits are the best suits, IMO. However, they are horribly uncomfortable in the summer because it gets so hot in that particular solstice season. For the two equinox seasons (spring a.k.a. vernal and fall a.k.a. autumn) and that other solstice season that most people love to hate (the winter), vested suits are second to none.

The suit, in general, is having a resurgence. Throwing all mine out tomorrow.

Vests are fantastic. Who cares if other people wear vests? If you're wearing it because you feel you have to prove something to anyone than it isn't worth wearing.

Retailers have been showing vests for the last year and a half so you were right on time. it was bound to start to come back, just like the DB suit is starting to. Just go with the flow they still look good right?

Suit coats are having a resurgence, especially with a popped collar, just as long as they're not worn with matching pants. The key with both the random vest and the popped-collar coat is to avoid looking as if you have what those outside of the world of fashion refer to as "a job". I have no worries that any look which implies respectable full-time employment will come into fashion any time in the near future.

Anyway, my original post was a bit facetious. I do like three-piece suits, so I'm not going to ditch them, and I'll probably keep wearing the vests with them, even at the risk of looking like I'm trying to immitate a casual wear fashion in my formal wear, when it's the other way around, with the casual wear fashion trying to immitate a traditional formal wear look.

I beg to differ. I have a cream linen three-piece that is quite comfortable in the warmer months.
