Hello SF, In this thread about some cheap shoes, BlueHorseShoe said "The vamps look like they are hanging on for dear life." Here are the pictures:
What is that supposed to mean? The vamp is the front area of the shoe, right? So... basically I just don't get it. Like, the vamp is too flat? I'm a real noob when it comes to good shoes and a lot of discussion of the higher-end brands goes over my head. I've read this old thread which is great but I don't yet understand what "makes a good vamp" or what would push a vamp teetering over the edge. So thanks if someone can answer my question about these shoes, but any discussion of vampage generally would be interesting (for others as well, I think) to read.

My only guess is that it is a comment based on two factors, the fact that the soles are really thin and they are probably glued.

You'd have to ask him as from construction perspective it's a nonsensical statement. As a derogatory statement it is arguably quite good.

The vamp is the part of the shoe that goes between the toe and the heel. On your shoes, it is the section just behind the wing tip that extends/swoops down to the sole.

In terms of the vamps hanging on for dear life, I have no idea what the other poster was talking about. The shoes look new and you can't assess the construction quality from the pictures provided.

My only guess is that the poster did not like the swooping pattern of the vamps. I don't understand that either, though, as it is a very traditional and common design.

Don't get too worried about what other posters say. People at SF have lots of strong opinions about things...sometimes they make sense and sometimes they don't.

Not really true. It is from the toe to the laces. The laced part is called the throat, or instep.

Thanks for the knowledge. Disregard my original comment. It should read as 'the throat' not the vamp. As in, the throat looks dis-proportionally small.
