The Vacuum Test: Meile Blue Moon vs. Dyson 14+

Costco had a screaming deal on the Dyson 14 Plus at $249 so we went for it today. I just vacuumed with my excellent Blue Moon yesterday but I went ahead and tried the Dyson. The Dyson simply picked up half a tunnel full of dirt. It is a superb vacuum and has better performance, I'm said to say given the cost difference, than my well loved Miele.

If you are in the market for a solid vacuum, check this deal out at your local Costco.

Highly recommended.

Just the wheel version. I have never seen the ball version go on sale.

I believe the ball version is called the Dyson Kwilk.

Got the DC25 myself. The ball makes it so much easier to steer.

Dyson has lots of a hype behind it. Seems like they go on sale around the $250 ish range. I would probably buy one, but I have no use for one.

This is sort of my point in posting. The performance is really top notch so in this case I believe the hype is justified. In my experience however they rarely go on sale at the $250 price point. My wife and I waited patiently for two years since we had a good vacuum and the lowest we saw on the DC-14 was $314 and $289 at Fry's for a refurb.

Kohl's always has the Dyson's at 30% if you have one of their charge cards. Target often PM's them as well.

A few years back I spent some time doing research on the major vacuum message boards.

The consensus there seemed to be that as good as the dyson suction is, the real difference in cleaning ability lies in the design of the brushes, an area where the dyson was poor.

Do you post at any of the vacuum boards AF?
Many of the had active political forums.

Yeah, though now I see vactalk has closed. It was the more serious one, though I think things grew stagnant. Just the same people rehashing the same tired debates, and the level of knowledge was too high for new members to get their bearing without being flamed. Plus, the old members were very anti-Dyson, and that let to trolling problems. IIRC they tried to freshen things up with an iron forum, I imagine that was the nail in the coffin for the regulars.

You are correct regarding the Dyson poor brush design. Much of the "dirt" that it appears to be sucking up that the Miele "missed" are actually carpet fibers that are ripped off from the carpet due to the overly stiff brush design. That's why the see-through tube fills up so quick.

Also, even the best of vacuums will not get all of the dirt in one pass. With the Miele, you just don't see the dirt that it would pick up if you went over the carpet again since it's in a bag and not see-through. Try the same experiment with the Dyson - let a carpet get really dirty, and go over it once. Empty the cannister and go over it again - you'll pick up more stuff that the first time missed.

Essentially, the Dyson overly stiff brush design goes hand in hand with the see through cannister. It's a marketing gimmick to make you do exactly what you did in this thread - say, "WOW this Dyson is AMAZING."

I'm not saying they are bad vacuums; they are better than most. But there is a reason that no high end carpet maker recommends them.
